Deuce 1 #3 December 5, 2003 I lost about 100 pounds on Atkins, but you can never go off it. Put on some muscle mass, and keep it on. Walk every day. You must marry meat, and keep carbs as a secret mistress.
Casch 0 #4 December 5, 2003 I've heard good and bad things about the Atkins diet, and I've been on it once or twice. It does work, and it works pretty well, but do you really want to cut out all the grains? I couldn't live without my pasta and breads. You will get the same effect by cutting out things like pop, chips and such, combined with some cardio. Just walk or jog 3 or 4 times a week for a half hour or so, and drink lots of water. Same effect as the atkins diet. It just takes a lot of self discipline sometimes

skymama 37 #6 December 5, 2003 I lost 60 pounds by eating less and following a higher protein/less carb diet and kept it off for 1 1/2 years. I got lazy, added back more snacks and alcohol and gained 15 back. Now, I'm back to being more strict and am losing the weight. The diet works. It's always better to add exercise though, but I'm lazy with that too. rehmwa 2 #7 December 5, 2003 10 pounds in 10 days on Atkins, but didn't really need to. I did it as support for the wife. But I've always responded quickly to high protein low carb meal plans. Everybody has a different metabolism. So it's more important to do 2 things: Fitness and diet (not dieting, but control what you eat) Fitness: strength, cardio and flexibility - all three, don't short one. Exercise is even known to moderate your appetite as you body will learn to be more efficient (I think fitness is most important and diet is more flexible) Diet: Find the right combination of foods that let you maintain what you want. If it's Atkins, great - Lucky me, that's the one for my system. If it's South Beach, great. But it needs to be custom to you. I know some people that are polar opposite to me. They do great on high carbs and low fat/protein. Some are complete fruit/veggie types. etc. I takes some exploration, so you guys need to be committed. With Atkins, if you are high activity, be prepared to be tired at first. It seems to me that the Atkins menu is a good subsistance start and then carbs to supplement for people with higher activity and metabolisms, but I'm just guessing here. Good luck - ... Kramer 0 #8 December 5, 2003 Chute- I researched the Atkins Diet for a paper a few months ago. It's pretty toxic to your body 'cause you are depriving yourself of so many basic nutrients and elements in food (such a carbs for example). It's not going to hurt you to go on it, but there are much better ways to lose weight. I came to college, and lost 50 pounds in five months just by eating a low-fat diet, and exercising a lot. Try it...(I attached a post-diet pic...never underestimate the power of a low-fat diet and exercise). -Kramer The FAKE KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!! themitchyone 0 #15 December 5, 2003 Any diet can work. When people are on any kind of diet it's the paying close attention to what they are eating and to CALORIE intake that causes the weight loss, IMO. I personally could never give up carbs!! I say eat reasonably healthy most of the time, pig sometimes without worry, and exercise regularly."If the Bible has taught us nothing else, and it hasn't, it's that girls should stick to girl's sports such as hot oil wrestling and foxy boxing." - Homer Simpson

Nightingale 0 #18 December 5, 2003 I tried it. It made me very sick. No energy, nauseous, and in a VERY foul mood. I just felt completely and totally sick. My doctor, who was the main sports medicine doctor for the Rams when they were in LA, read me the riot act bigtime when she found out. what she told me: 1. its too high in fat to be heart-healthy. **PLEASE NOTE: DR ATKINS HIMSELF HAD A HEART ATTACK A YEAR OR SO AGO** 2. ketosis is not a healthy state for your body to be in... if you are in ketosis, your body thinks its starving. your metabolism slows down. this is not what you want when you're trying to lose weight. 3. the diet does not contain enough calories. this is why your enery levels will drop. if you have low energy, you are unlikely to exercise, which is the best way to lose weight. her recommendations: 1. if you MUST try a high protein diet, try the Scarsdale diet instead. lower fat, more fruits and veggies. 2. Exercise. don't worry so much about what you eat. if you're exercising regularly, your body will begin to crave what it needs to maintain itself (ie: healthy stuff) 3. if you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories than you burn. period. it doesn't matter if its carbs or protein or whatever. its better if the food is low fat and high vitamin. 4. No food is bad for you WHEN EATEN IN MODERATION. Even chocolate can be good for you... chocolate is very high in magnesium. A lot of times a craving indicates that you require some kind of nutrient in that food. Its okay to give in to cravings, as long as you only give in a little bit (a mini hershey bar is ok, a king size is not). 5. you spent a long time putting the weight on. don't expect to lose it overnight, because if you do, you'll put it back on just as fast. SLOW weight loss is the key to keeping it off. 6. remember: thinner does NOT always mean healthier, because all ways to lose weight are not healthy. After receiving the above advice, I followed it. I started exercising more (I was at karate a lot, but had been doing more teaching than training, so I made a point of getting in my own training time too, and working out with the students more), and the eating right thing was a lot easier... I didn't crave the sweets and fried food as much, and when I did eat it, it was easier to only eat a little bit. I lost 25 pounds over the course of a year, and I've kept 20 of them off. Sure, like practically every female, I'd love to drop 10 more, but I'm okay with it if I don't. I look fine, and I'm healthy. After dropping the weight, I saw an aunt of mine who I hadn't seen in a while. She said "oh my god! you look great! you lost weight! what's your secret?!" I just laughed and said "Eat right and exercise." She looked SO disappointed! She frowned and said "oh. I was hoping there was some trick!" My own tip to add to my doctor's: get a digital scale that reads to the 10th of a pound. If you start the week out at say, 145 on monday, and the scale reads 145 still on friday, you may think you haven't accomplished anything... what I learned by accidentally getting a scale with the 10th of a pound breakdown was that you can start the week out at 145.9 and finish at 145.1. you've lost almost a whole pound, and you wouldn't know it with a regular scale. A better judge, though, is to pick a pair of jeans that are snug or that you can't zipper or whatever, and see how they fit once a week. If you're exercising, you can gain weight (muscle weighs more than fat!) and actually lose fat and inches. Scales don't lie, but they can decieve. If you're having trouble figuring out what to eat, see your doctor. He or she can refer you to a nutritionist.
meltdown 0 #19 December 5, 2003 I just got done losing 30 lb over the course of 6 months. I eat all the same stuff, but about half of what I used to eat, plus I've been riding my bike appx. 8 miles 3-4 times a week. It just seems so unnatural to deprive your body of particular foods - I don't think I would do the Atkins or anything like that unless I was totally desperate. That said, I've seen many people successfully lose weight on Atkins; whether they can keep it off remains to be seen. Good luck.
hooked 0 #20 December 5, 2003 I agree with most of the posts......you must learn to eat less, eat healthy and exercise!! Try walking every day! I just can't see the benefit of depriving oneself from a food group. You have to learn a new lifestyle change in your eating habits. aeromobile 0 #21 December 5, 2003 I couldn't agree with you more. It seems carbs have a bad name, and people believe that there's some mystical thing about carbs that's bad. Loosing weight is all about eating fewer calories than you burn. Carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories per gram. I think the Atkins diet is easy to follow by limiting calories by not eating the french fries or bread associated with your meal. Again, it's about limiting the calories not the carbs. I also believe there is a lot of hidden fat in carbs that people are not aware and there are additional calories in carb type food, but blame it on the fat not the carbs. I know that there are a people out there that have lost a lot of weight using the Atkins diet, and that's a good thing. However, it's a start to eating a more healthy diet. Jessica 0 #22 December 5, 2003 Holy crap Deuce is such a hottie. I tried Atkins and three days into it my head hurt so bad I thought I was going to die and my entire body felt like crap. Deuce 1 #23 December 5, 2003 Thanks, Jessicakes I don't do a strict Adkins. I think the culprits are sugar and processed flour. I think most folks unmonitored diets contain tons of sugar, and that is why our (US) diabetes rates are so high, along with our obesity rate. It's just been my experience that 100 calories of white bread "sticks" a lot more than 100 calories of popcorn (without butter), and way more than 100 calories of turkey breast meat. Also, muscle burns more calories than non-lean tissue and keeps your metabolism up. If a person can find just a little time each day for push-ups, pull-ups, curls, leg lifts, the ab-wheel, and situps, (not all of them every day, but two or three) it makes a world of difference in the rate one loses fat. The biggest muscle groups are in the legs, so an easy way to get those going is to walk with ankle weights. I must also add, I would never have lost the weight if I hadn't developed a chronic pain condition in my feet. Like most men, I didn't really have a problem with my big body. But, that said, the Mrs. likes the new me much better.
Michele 1 #24 December 5, 2003 So here's the deal...on the way to the Christmas party, I went over a bump in the road, and after my car settled out, my body didn't...a little jiggling was happening. At the holiday party, I won a door prize - a 6 month unlimited membership to a local gym. While part of me was not a happy camper (other people got stuffed animals, TVs, wine baskets, or gioft certificates to Macys...I got the one to the gym...), I understood the benefit right away. I will be starting it in a few days. See, I'm chubby. I wasn't always chubby, but I'm not a small woman in any way, even at my leanest. I have all sorts of "excuses/reasons" why I'm chubby, but only one matters: I have the metabolism of a desert tortoise. Why do I think that? My thyroid tests always comes back "low normal", I can sleep anywhere for any length of time, and I eat once a day (usually around 7-8 pm). And my meal is NOT a buger, fries and milkshake, but rather usually something proportionate and healthy (i.e. a Lean Cuisine, salad with vinegar dressing); or maybe a turkey burger (low fat) or some chicken, rice and green beans. I may have a snack of an apple or something in the afternoon, but that is very rare...it's not like I don't have an appetite, and those who've gone to meals with me have seen me do the burger thing (or the enchilada thing), but I only go out about once a month...and it's been this way for years. Years. Anyway, I suppose my thought/question is this...how does one spike their metabolism naturally? Any thoughts? I suspect I've killed my metabolism, or scared it so badly it's in hiding. Any ideas to coax it back into life, and bring it to an appropriate level?
