skybytch 273 #1 December 9, 2003 Since I don't get to go "home" for Xmas this year, I decided to buy myself a present. I've wanted to learn to play the guitar for years now. One of my employees is quite talented and gives lessons. He was headed to the music store today so I handed him enough cash to buy a decent starter acoustic guitar for me... I should have it this evening, and my first lesson tomorrow! Merry Xmas to me....

Kramer 0 #4 December 9, 2003 Lisa, I started playing about a year ago, you'll be amazed at how fast you learn. The hardest part of learning to play the guitar is the first month or so...if you can stick with it past that, the rest comes pretty naturally. It's a fun talent to posses...nice gift. -Kramer The FAKE KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!!

jsaxton 0 #7 December 9, 2003 It's a little easier to learn music theory on a piano, but it's do-able on a guitar. Learning to read music (real notation, not tablature) will greatly accelerate your ability to learn guitar. Be sure to ask your instructor to teach you to read. skybytch 273 #9 December 9, 2003 QuoteIt's a little easier to learn music theory on a piano 6 years of playing clarinet followed by four years of piano lessons... even after 20 years I can still read treble clef well enough to play the right hand on a piano (well, okay, easy stuff anyway). sarge 0 #18 December 9, 2003 What pisses me off about the guitar Lisa is that after 25 years of 'playing' guitar I still suck!! Yeah, to people that don't know shit about playing the instrument, they think I'm some sort of virtuoso... I told you about a friend of mine that I got into playing himself... within a year the guy was jamming like I never could at my best!!! Anyway, its just personal or me, I love thrashing and FTW! I've accepted I'll never be selling out the Auditorium or even my basement...-- I'm done with the personally meaningful and philosophical sigs!! skybytch 273 #19 December 9, 2003 QuoteI love thrashing and FTW! Yeah, that's my attitude too. Regardless, I'm sure everyone here at the dz will be happy that it's an acoustic guitar and not an electric.
kai2k1 0 #20 December 9, 2003 QuoteRegardless, I'm sure everyone here at the dz will be happy that it's an acoustic guitar and not an electric. all of the sudden the song "smoke on the water " popped into my head I must be a glutton for punishment, i bought my stepson a guitar and an amp for xmas. 10 years ago i would have bought a marshall half stack, now, i like the little amps. jsaxton 0 #22 December 9, 2003 I'm not an ass, I'm an ASSHOLE. For several years I was a professional Jazz musician. Some of the guitarists that I worked with couldn't sight read very well, but they could all read. The lack of reading ability was usually more of an issue in a stage band setting and recording sessions.
GARYC24 3 #23 December 9, 2003 Let us know what kinda guitar ya got! And, if you could get a price check' What's a "Taylor" acoustic going for in Fl.? One thing I decided on is NEVER get a too cheap of an instrument(cheap as in quality)..when I play a better quality-made guitar it changes everything I play. My next acoustic will probably be a "Taylor" and will cost ~$1200 (min). I will get top of the line for now on!..the sounds and feel are so much better! mfrese 0 #24 December 9, 2003 As Jerry Lee Lewis supposedly replied when a reporter asked him if his band could read music: "A few of them do, but it don't hurt their playin' any". Seriously, I used to sight read when I started playing (OMFG...37 years ago !), but I've lost it since then through lack of practice. I still play (just getting ready to buy a new electric, amp, and a digital 8-track, in fact), but I must say, having a good acoustic guitar that you can play a little bit can really save your sanity sometimes. Good luck with the lessons Lisa...the pain in your fingertips goes away in about three weeks, once you get your callouses Doctor I ain't gonna die, Just write me an alibi! ---- Lemmy/Slash
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #25 December 9, 2003 merry x-mas!! I have played on and off for ten years and I still suck. I take looong breaks sometimes, but i've been playing a little bit lately. However, I know i'll never really be good, it would've happened by now. :p Peter is really good:) Angela.
