To Vicodin, or not to Vicodin

Recommended Posts

I'm at work in a significant amount of pain right now from my recent sinus surgery. It can best be described as like a moderate ice cream headache.

I took some Tylenol a couple of hours ago with little effect. I have my prescription Vicodin with me, though. I could take it, but I have only taken three of them TOTAL in the last week. I'd rather be in pain than be the next Rush Limbaugh.

Problem is, I hate Vicodin because it makes me goofy. I don't like how it makes me feel, and the "uncaring" side-effect is not something that is typically good when performing legal analyses, briefs to the court, or correspondence to opposing counsel and/or clients.

Should I suck it up and drive on, thereby lowering productivity? Or, should I increase my productivity at the risk that the product will be more interesting than usual?

Here is something my doc recommends for me when I have significant pain but need to be functional. . .(p.s. I get no pain relief from vicodin, it just makes me feel like I drank 12 martini's in an hour). . .Motrin (advil or other type) 2 to 3 (400 to 600 mgs) combined with 2 extra strength tylenol. Tylenol is great on pain but surgical pain usually involves swelling and tylenol alone does nothing for the swelling. . .advil will take care of the swelling and you will get relief. . .

Leave the vicodin at home. . .

The problem with the Advil and/or Aspirin based products are that they thin the blood and make bleeding easier. Considering the significant continuing blood loss, I'd prefer the pain over one of the secretaries or the boss entering my office to that sight.

I'm wondering if I took half a Vicodin...

Never having sinus surgery, I was not aware of the bleeding issues. . .ick. . .

Okay, take the 1/2 vicodin. . .still pretty much turns me to jello but some people get good relief from it. . .

Good luck to you!

I couldn't take it anymore. I took a half a vicodin and 500mg of Tylenol at 1:00.

My goodness! I feel like a new person! No out of it feeling, nothing. In fact, I'm bloody motivated right now. I even came up with something at work, talked to my boss, and she said, "Dang. That's a brilliant idea." I love it when I find a way to kick the opponents' asses when they are not playing nice.

One Vicodin - screws me up.
1/2 vicodin - just enough to palliate.

God, don't let me get hooked on this stuff...

Generally people don't just "get hooked". If taken as prescribed you should be fine. On the other hand you always have a choice not to take them.

Physiologically, it's pretty tough to get hooked if you are really in pain when you take the narcotics. At least that's what my surgeon told me, and so far he appears to be correct. I've taken a lot of painkillers with no cravings, no need, no dependence.

You can take a gram of tylenol at at time or 15 mg/kg, whichever is less. Watch out for the vicodin which also has 500mg of acetaminophen (tylenol) in it. It's easy to get too much. Most of the effect of vicodin is from the acetaminophen. the hydrocodone part actually does very little except f/u up.
Alternating with motrin (ibuprofen) every 4 hours helps too. Shouldn't make you bleed unless you're already bleeding.
But as always, take as directed and read the bottle.
