Why are you here? (DZ.COM)

Recommended Posts

I'm here because it sucks me in when I should be doing other things. Its a bad habit like cocaine but cheaper, but proably just as hard to kick. I used to just check the body count, but now I peruse everything. 99% worthless garbage, 1% useful information. It seems more like a social club for freaks, outcasts, and other miscreants who skydive once and a while, than a skydiving site. Why am I here? Because I can't help it. :P

You use the word skydiver like its a title that goes along with CEO, CFO, President, etc. I don't like titles. I see too many people obsessed about titles and go through life very very unhappy searching for the perfect title.

As far as DZ.com. I look at talk back because I can always find something to make me laugh. I look at the incidents to make sure I don't miss sending someone I know flowers, or learn from someone else's misfortune. I look at General Skydiving because some people ask questions and sometimes I have an opinion to share, same with Safety and Training.

People that don't have considerable experience skydiving really shouldn't be giving advice on skydiving unless it is a first hand experience someone else can learn from but I see no reason for 1 jump skydivers and students and wannabe's not to join us in talk back and lurk the other forums. I think economics is a big reason most people that want to continue skydiving don't. Maybe some day they will be able to continue so I have no intention of snubbing them now.
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I signed up here to learn more about skydiving while I was in AFF. I have since completed AFF and am working on getting my license, so I am still a low jump chump (16). There is a wealth of knowledge on this site, and I have already learned quite a bit, and will continue to learn more.

That's why I'm here.

and I fully agree with your first post.

Hmmm. Maybe I ought to go home then.

As I said before, I am a skydiver, and I post here because I wish to keep in touch with the skydiving world that I'm already a part of.

There are others that are here because they wish to become a part of that world without actually jumping.

So tell me now, are you here for the right reasons? If not, get out to your local dropzone, and start jumping.

I'm not a skydiver.

I make occasional skydives, but I really hang out at DZ.com because I feel that there is a lot of good information to be had here, that I can use to apply to my sport. Skydivers have already considered many of the issues we face, and sometimes the communication between the two sports is poor, so we end up re-inventing the wheel. I'd rather see somebody else's wheel first.

Saying that this place ought to be for "skydivers only" would make as much sense as banning all skydivers from the BASE Board.

I think I am here for the right reasons. But, sorry to ruin your "skydivers only" party by showing my face. I'm certainly glad that Sangiro doesn't share such a limited word view.

Well, as an inexperienced jumper I am here on dz.com to soak it all up. I want to learn what makes the skydiving world tick and how I can keep myself and more importantly others safe when I am in the air. That is my #1 goal to be safe and have fun. I want to jump my little butt off and do it for a long time. I frequent all of the forums to see what wisdom people have passed on. I do not take this information at face value, I always check with other experienced jumpers to see what they have to say about the info. presented.

I am of the mindset that if you are open to learning and never stop, you will excel in whatever you do. This is my hope in skydiving, if I learn, I can fly, if I'm safe, I can fly even more and with others! I try to be as conscious in the air as possible and get the job done with little rif-raf.

I agree with you about the whuffo jumpers and those that are striving to be jumpers. I'm striving so hard but this winter is killing me. I don't think its that hard to tell the difference between people who have jumped once and those who wish to jump again. I just chuckle and laugh to myself when I meet people who are like "I skydive". My response is how many jumps, and if they say 1 I always ask why they haven't done more than that. The usual list of excuses follows but mostly I think people are just plane scared. That's fine, if it wasn't scary it wouldn't be as thrilling to some and skydiving is not for everyone. I know I wouldn't want to be in the sky with some of the people that I met that only jumped once or a few times!

Why are you here?

To share in my/our experiences of this wonderful sport (or should I say lifestyle), to meet interesting people and to have fun. Unfortunately, drama and politics have a way of yielding an ugly face in this sport, but drama and politics exist in other sports as well.

I would agree that lesser experienced jumpers do need to be leary of any advice given by jumpers (regardless of experience levels) here on DZ.COM, but people need to understand a thing or two about human nature and why (I hate this term) 100 jump wonders like to tell people about their experiences. For those of you who may be at my level of experience or above, please remember when you were a 100 jump wonder (once again I hate this term). Yes we would likely all agree that we didn't know anything, but we weren't exactly student skydivers as well. We had some experience. We just don't have the experience that someone who's been involved in the sports for years and may have thousands of jumps may have. But we are all different and some people may find a certain skill easier than someone else. Jump numbers alone are not a indication of skill. But they are an indication of a certain exposure of experience in the sport.

As for the one-time jumper, hey as long as they aren't trying to tell someone how to skydive, what's the harm in letting them hangout here on DZ.COM. To me DZ.COM is a way of meeting people from across the country and around the world without having to meet them in person (of course it's even better when you finally get to meet someone you've been talking to online at a boogie).

Live life to it's fullest, don't worry about the things you have no control over. Treat people with the respect you'd like them to treat you with and don't worry, be happy. There's nothing in skydiving that 1000 jumps can't fix. Well I know that last sentence isn't 100% correct, but it applies in most cases. ;)

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Isn't that like saying "I'm a vegetarian, but I like a good cheeseburger every once in a while"? B|:P

Just kidding pal. B|

Dude, first of all, I meant no negatiity in my post, I think you're taking it all wrong. I'm only trying to say that most of the people here who are 1 timers want to continue skydiving, and they shouldn't be slammed on (Like Kat69 was, I found that cruel). This has been an issue going around dz.com for a while now, and I just thought it needed to be addressed. I mean no negative vibes to ANYONE. I don't wanna have a "group of worthy skydivers" on this site, nor do I wanna cut out people starting out in the sport. I'm simply stating that a skydiving site is for skydivers, nuff said. If you jump or wanna jump, you're welcome here. No bad vibes.

By the way, you're a skydiver, whether you like it or not. ;)

I too lurked at DZ.com for few weeks. I was instantly hooked after my first jump and a little embarrassed at how little I knew about the sport (and also a little shy to ask after a first jump :$).

I was impressed at how welcoming and friendly everyone (almost everyone) at DZ.com is to the experienced and those hoping to become the experienced.

I think its up to the individual to decide what they will obtain from this site. Ignore the stuff that doesn't interest you (like in life :)
We all have different circumstances that may pose as barriers to us becoming actual skydivers (i.e. $$$ and/or spouses). But make no error about it, I will be a skydiver soon! Most importantly, this website was a place where I can talk to others who are in similar circumstances and where you can realize that you are not alone (and not crazy ;)).

I came to this site because not unlike a heroin addict I was "joesing" for
everyThing skydiving after one tandem jump....I DID NOT ASK for this addiction I did not know it would happen.....I just passed AFF 1 after my second attempt Saurday in the frezzing cold
and I am going to jump again this weekend weather permitting...if I am not welcome on this site I will go elsewear......everybody talks about what a great community Skydivers are.....You may very well be
But you do have a way of diregarding those with only a couple of jumps.you are a very guarded group of people understandibly so But jumping out of a plane even ONCE is a very very BIG DEAL and should not be treated lightly by those of you who have jumped thousands of times....I jump for me and not you....I come here obtain knowlegde to help me jump better....../........AM I WELCOME?.......sorry I'm venting
I jump for me and not you....

So now I go back to my question, why are you here?

-There is a lot of really good information here. Instructors at the dz are always the best people to ask, but sometimes you get solutions here that they never thought of. Plus, I like to read about all sides of every situation.
-Events. It's great to hear about which dzs have cheap jumps/specialty aircraft.
-Keep in touch with skydivers around the world.
-Sometimes, people on here are funny, and I like to laugh.

Now, to criticize some of what you said.

What are the "right" reasons? To learn? To teach? To have fun? To get validation for yourself by getting attention? By constantly stirring the pot? There are no "right" reasons.

Now, to further criticize. You claim that a person is a skydiver if they intend on jumping. Let's take a look at someone who is near and dear to us: Lee (aka Greene.) She has many many many jumps, but I think (I could be wrong, someone correct me if I am), that she does not intend on jumping again. She posts here. Is she here for the "right" reasons? What about the girl that wants to rig but doesn't want to skydive? While these women may be considered whuffos by many's standards, they come here to read and post. They even participate in skydiving threads! People who intend on jumping again, participate in zero skydiving threads and only discuss their sex life...they're here for the "right" reasons? I am confused.

There are no "right" or "wrong" reasons to be here. Why someone wants to be here...I don't really care. Just because I choose to ignore some people doesn't mean that they're not annoying, nor do I think they should leave the site and go back to "jumping" (well, only if they're being jerks and making personaly attacks, etc.)
There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

Im still waiting for someone to give me a better indicator of skill that can be used without knowing the person personally.

You can't give every person you meet a checkout dive, and a canopy test.

But the number of jumps is a very good indicator of MOST peoples skill levels.

Even the "one jump wonder's" are potential skydivers. One of my friends SO has only made 1 tandem (so far) and posts on here. We are working on getting her to finish the FJC and do AFF. I don't have any problem with her or anyone else that wants to learn more about "THE SPORT". Bring it on!

The reason I'm here is because since I started jumping (last year) I really fell in love with the sport, I want to learn as much as I can and the best place to do it is where there are lots of people, with different levels of experience and different ways to do things, also, noticed the level of comradery which I consider is very unique compared to other sports.

Ditto!! :)

No, I just practice a lot on WB! :P

Yay! I rarely hear that! You just have to remember to take the good with the bad. It's a "welcoming" site, which means that people who don't jump much post here frequently. That isn't exactly a bad thing.

I'm just waiting for the standard Dennis Miller:

"Now I don't wanna get on a rant here butt......"

I'm here because I believe I'm a skydiver. I did my student progression over the past 2 summers, and now am licensed (still need to send my yellow card)
I've jumped 50 times now, but too many clouds lately in Seattle, but I still go to the DZ when I can in hopes of jumping again. I'm even buying my first rig.

I hang out on DZ.com too "hang out" with other skydivers during the week when I can't jump, and to keep myself involved in the sport and maybe learn a thing or two. Oh, and it helps pass the time in "Talk back" while I'm at my crappy job.

I started jumping sept 1991.
I quit and had tears of joy on my return jump at CrossKeys(eventhough I had a cut-away) It was great!
Joined DZ.com then went to Rantoul 2002, met Sunny & Carrie (I ready for next year...I can get my foot behind my head. I really ready this time:ph34r:)
I've gotten advise that has allowed me to do things that I needed in emergency situations:) A brother/Sisterhood that I have 100% open door policy for.
I am here for all of you also:)

My first jump was at the Ranch in NY. And though it was by far the coolest experience of my life - the initiation INTO my life - I was given no info. They didn't explain AFF to me or tell me how to get into the sport - they took my money, shook my hand, gave me a certificate and sent me on my way.

A year later, I made another tandem at Jumptown in Orange, Mass. Again, great experience - but no info on becoming a licensed skydiver.

Then, a year later (last year) I went to Skydive Tecumseh and said I wanted to make my third tandem. They told me I was nutz and needed to get into the sport for real. I signed up that day for the static line program.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say, is that this is a great resource for people who have the interest, but get lost in the "tandem factory" and are never told how to get into the sport. If I had utilized dropzone.com four years ago, I'd probably have another 500 jumps by now.

My current reasons for using this site - learn. learn from other people's mistakes. shits-n-giggles. cool people like WrongWay. :P
