happythoughts 0 #1 December 17, 2003 A few years ago, Isaac Asimov wrote the "Robot" science fiction series. Eventually, one of the robots made it into another series, Foundation. The robot was speaking of his "prime directive". To do no harm to humans. Also, to not allow harm to come to humans through inaction. His problem was that he had to think out every possible consequence of his actions in the future. Eventually, he became totally immobile. Most actions have a good/bad side. He was not able to predict the future. If he performed some action that saved a persons life, but that person later performed some monstrous deed, then he failed to "do no harm". Politics is like that. You try to make a decision based on the best information available. Who will be the friends/enemies or leaders/monsters of the future? No one can tell. The only other alternative would be to do nothing, but then people would scream that the govt is doing nothing about . Generally, the Monday-morning quarterbacks, who retro-question every decision made, are doing it for political gain anyway. The ones that I can't stand are the "do-nothings". They won't tell you what to do, but always question everything once it is done.
