giving blood and skydiving

Recommended Posts

Hypoxia is lack of oxygen to the brain, right? You need your blood to do that, less blood + less air = bad.

If it was me, I wouldn't jump that day and play the weekend by ear, but most likely I'd be back in the air the next day (i'm sorta hard-headed like that).:P

Okay, not a doctor but I'm pretty sure you'll only be grounded for the day (maybe even only a few hours). The effect of the withdrawl is higher for smaller women. So if you are on the light side, be sure to bring some cookies or OJ to bring your blood sugar back up.:)

The only effect will be your on 'wing load', you'll be a little bit lighter :D:D:D:D:P

You may be on to something here. The same thing applies to when you take a dump right?

Seriously, I wouldn't jump on the same day I gave blood. But I'd likely be up there the next day. I mean, it's not all thay different than jumping the morning after the night before. :)

That can be your new "botched swoop" excuse.

Ok, so I think I did a stupid thing. I made an appointment to give blood on Friday. Will this keep me from being able to skydive all weekend, or just for the day? Or neither of the above? Anyone know?
Thanks!

Kelly

I would personally take a day off...Better to be safe, but if you are bound and determined to jump, eat sugary foods and drink plenty of OJ and water. Also, eat between jumps (small snacks) to keep your sugar up. Remember, that adrenaline rush depletes sugar and your energy...:)

Giving blood and skydiving....

I gave blood back in August whilest skydiving...the ground didn't appreciate the blood...it didn't even give me juice and cookies after I graciously supplied it with some o' my best red stuff...:S It was just a little blood anyhow...sprained my thumb too. Not one of Jaye-girl's better landings.. :D:D

I cannot believe how paranoid skydivers are these days. your constanmt worry about openings, giving blood, and having bells and whistles to remind you the jump is over, and all the other nonsense has taken MOST of the fun out of your sport.

relax a bit....if you have to worry....do so about something important.

Should only be for the day there young lady.

At Z-Hills we give a free jump ticket for people who give blood. They usually do it after they are done jumping for the day and use the free ticket on the following day.

The only ill effect I saw was when a girl had given blood. Then she drank a few malt liquor's the same evening.

The next day she was on the High Altitude Jump where I was the JM. It was her first High Altitude and asked me to go out with her. No biggie.

She seemed fine all the way to altitude and just before we exited. Upon exit she went hypoxic and passed out. Since I had never seen someone passed out in Free-Fall before I was not sure what was wrong with her at first. When I realized it I chased her down and got her stable. We jumped at 22,000' and it took me until 10,000' to catch her. Luckily she came to but then at 5,000' which was the planned break-off and pull for her she looked at me like I was crazy. I almost had to pull for her.

When she got on the ground she asked what happened and then did not believe that she had been passed out. She finally believed it though and was very thankful that I was there.

It all comes down to your own personal gut feeling. If it does not feel right then don't do it.

I am sure you will be fine. Maybe you could change it to tomorrow though and get extra drunk. ;):P

I believe it takes three days for your body to recoup the blood. I could be wrong. Just ask when give this time. Then you can be more informed. :)
Hope this helped a little.

Ok, not the response I was expecting, but definitely the one I was hoping for (except from Chuteless, who apparently thinks myself and a lot of skydivers are gigantic p*ssies! An audible-- who the fuck needs one of those?!)! Sweet! I can be a good citizen and still have my playtime in the sky! Thanks!

just jump :P

What she said.

Actually, please give yourself a 'personal moment' before manifesting... close your eyes, take a deep breath... you'll know if you're not all there.

Pilots aren't supposed to fly after having given blood. It's not recomended that one "operate heavy machinery"... It's different for everyone. Some people can't even walk straight (suckers!) I've never really experience any ill effects from giving blood and I would likely be jumping the same day. But not before giving myself a 'personal moment' B|
