ltdiver 3 #1 December 17, 2003 100 Years Ago, The Dream of Icarus Became Reality Thursday 17 December 1903, in the USA, on the deserted beaches of North Carolina, at a place called Kitty Hawk. The dawn was grey and misty. The engine started and it ticked over perfectly. Orville Wright applied full power and released the tether. The Flyer slid along the rail slowly gaining speed. Five people from the village witnessed this historic event : the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight. Paying tribute to this feat, FAI publishes on its Webpage a text written by an enthusiastic Swiss private pilot, who offered to describe in his own words this historic flight, which marked the beginning of an extraordinary human and technological era for mankind : http://www.fai.org/news_archives/fai/000295.asp ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

kevin922 0 #3 December 17, 2003 After reading that story and seeing the telegram that the brothers sent back : Quote"Success - Four flights Thursday morning - All against 21 mile wind - Started from level with engine power alone - Average speed through air thirty one miles - Longest 57 seconds - Inform press - Home Christmas stop” It reminds me of SMSes sent by Yuri and/or Robert after they set a record with their wingsuit base flights.. interesting :)

kallend 2,150 #5 December 17, 2003 I and a colleague went for a celebratory flight this morning in a rented Piper Arrow. Ceilings 1500ft, 25F on the ground. The alternator pooped out about an hour into the flight. Oh well, at least we got into the air on 12/17/03... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. Guest #6 December 17, 2003 I heard the President's speech this morning on radio. Very nice. Also, I heard this AM that a bunch (about 100) experimental aircraft are going to buzz around in formation over Puget Sound... We actually have good weather today! mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

Lee03 0 #8 December 17, 2003 I was also planning on making a flight today.. to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of powered flight. Had the plane reserved.. was ready to go.. Beautiful day.. crystal blue skies.. not a cloud in sight what could possibly go wrong..... wind 290 @ 24 gusting to 30..that's what! Wind speed of 25 shuts us down I had hoped to enter 17 Dec 2003 in my logbook. but it wasn't to be. DAMN Weather! -------- To put your life in danger from time to time ... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities. --Nevil Shute, Slide Rule
