help. car pre amp?

Recommended Posts

only if the amp has a high side input, looks much like the output. usually only very low end units have this, at least in my experience. Gotta have the RCA pre-outs. [:/]

Not really....there is another way. If the amp has high-level inputs, it is possible. I have a Rockford Fosgate Punch 400 in my 2000 Jeep for my subwoofer. ( and my RF isn't a low-end cheap amp) It piggybacks off the input to the amp that is under the rear passenger seat. Your amp should have two seperate kinds of inputs...high level and RCAs. Use the high level ones and you should be ok. Call up Crutchfield and tell em that you got a new vehicle and want to install the amp (that you bought from them a while back) and they will tell you which wires to hook up to. That's what I did anyway.

Edit: Rorry, meant high-level inputs.

Good Luck.

Yup, you can.

Essentially you wire the head unit speaker outputs directly into this little "box" that spits out through RCA jacks. From there you just plug into whatever downstream application you have. Effectively this device attenuates the output signal down to an RCA input jack level (...how, I'm not sure, but I've used one).

Worst case scenario....you burn your car to the ground.;)

For starters, head over to the12volt.com or TeamROCS and read the technical articles.

Here are The Important Things:
  • Wire the positive directly to your battery. Going through your fuse box is taboo. Amplifiers draw way too may amps for that.

  • On the positive battery power cable for the amp you must have a fuse within the first few inches of the battery. If you get into a serious wreck, you'll thank me.;)

  • Keep your ground wire as short as possible and make sure it goes to the frame or a really good contact point.

  • Run your power lines (batery + & remote) down one side of the vehicle and the signal leads down the othe to prevent inductive noise

  • If you don't feel up to the task, there's no shame in hiring a competant installer, with insurance bond, to do the install for you.

  • If you decide to do it yourself, I recommend heading to Wal-Mart or Best Buy and picking up one of their all-in-one amp wiring kits. It will have the proper gauge cables for your wattage along with fusing and everything else you'll need. Instructions, too.:)
Edit: Sorry, you're in the UK, go to your nearest Wal-Mart or Besty Buy alternative:$B|
