Hazarrd 1 #27 December 26, 2003 Wake up people, this has been happening to our country for the past 15 years. Like someone said earlier, it's called globalization. It isn't anything new. Christ, look at Nike and every other company that supports sweat shop labor. How many of you own something made by Nike? If you are going to boycott this film for that reason, go ahead and add about a thousand other items to your list to boycott. .-.

I type slower than I think so I often leave a word out. That SHOULD read as follows: American companies who enjoy being in America SHOULD keep their jobs in America. wmw999 2,588 #30 December 26, 2003 QuoteJobs cannot be found in this country because they have all been sent overseas! Jobs have been sent overseas because more money can be made, and therefore shared with the executives and stockholders, if the workers are paid less. That is capitalism. ´It´s what made America great.´ Short-sighted, but so many things are right now. If you don´t like the global economy, look for and buy domestic products. Most won´t be competitively priced, but that´s the cost. By the way, the global economy is a real thing, and, given the very small part of the world population that we form, probably a good thing. We have a much higher standard of living than many other countries. It´s more sustainable in the long run to deal with people who don´t envy and hate us with good reason. Wendy W. (writing from Brazil, part of that global economy)There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

McDuck 0 #32 December 26, 2003 Hmmm, I was mainly just being selfish when I copied and pasted that from an article that was copied and pasted to send in an email to me from my agent. "Selfish" being the word that I use to describe my posting it here in the first place due to the fact that if that movie were filmed here, there might have been an opportunity for my agent to get me a bit part on it. jfields 0 #33 December 26, 2003 While there is nothing wrong with your bringing up the issue and mentioning a boycott, I don't think it will work. As a nation, we are too selfish. We have grown accustomed to cheap, high-quality goods brought to stores near us so we can buy them conveniently. The huge array of affordable merchandise helps keep our standard of living so high. Where does the stuff come from? Often, overseas. It permeates everything around us. Someone mentioned Nike. Nike owns no factories. Not one. Not a single Nike employee is working somewhere stitching tennis shoes together. The entire company is really focused on marketing, product development and supply chain management. They design shoes, stir up demand for them, then have someone else make them and ship them. They go where labor is cheap, because they know the price points Americans will pay for shoes. If they had to pay domestic labor, the cost would go up and they would sell less shoes. The Gap, Land's End, and other apparel companies are pretty similar. They design and sell. Every day, we tell corporations that this is okay. We buy generally buy mass-produced products over handmade ones, because they are cheaper. We buy based on price, without researching the origin. We only care about price and quality. As a whole nation, we actually care about price a lot more. There are some exceptions, and some local businesses will prosper on the basis of higher quality. My wife and I bought a wonderful hutch made by hand in the Amish country around Lancaster, PA. It is built with amazing dedication to quality, and it will last a lifetime. Our whole bedroom set? IKEA. We can't afford to buy that much furniture of the same quality as the hutch. We could replace the entire bedroom set twice over for the cost of the one piece of Amish furniture. Do I have a hatred of local furniture manufacturers? No. But the IKEA stuff is good enough at a great price. Such is economics. Movie making is no different. They are focused on the bottom line. If they can chop 10% off the production cost of a movie by shifting the location, it will save them millions of dollars. Through every day buying decisions, pressure for corporate profit and the feeling of entitlement for our high standard of living, we've basically asked them to continue the practice of shopping the global labor and materials marketplaces. DJL 235 #34 December 26, 2003 QuoteThat is capitalism. ´It´s what made America great.´ Short-sighted, but so many things are right now. The big picture here is that Americans expect to be paid more for doing less. That's why manufacturing goes to South America and why tech is going to South Asia. Capitalism is at work but I don't think it's so short sighted. Americans will realize that they have to work more and make better or get paid less if they want to keep their job. Go visit any REAL tech company (not friggin AOL) and you'll see that it's mostly people from India."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
