The real problem with TSA and carrying rigs on the plane

Recommended Posts

You realize in your second to last sentence that you publicly admitted to commiting a felony? Might want to edit that.

Depending on the interpretation, it might not be. The blade of a hook knife is smaller than a safety razor, which is a permitted item, per the TSA. If you want to really be sure, remove the blade from the hook knife and put it in your shaving kit.

when I flew home from florida, they took the blade off my friend's razor. It was just a normal mach3 razor, but they took all his blades, and we thought those were supposed to be okay....:S

A terrorist can shave you to death you know :P:P

the really funny thing was, they let me on the plane with two wooden stillettos holding my hair up! They look like fancy hairsticks, but they're made out of purpleheart, which is one of the hardest woods known, and needle sharp at the tips. I wear them because I figure if a terrorist is gonna be armed, I want to be armed too.

guess I look too sweet and innocent to be walking on a plane with a weapon. They stopped the lady in front of me for wearing something similar, though.

:D

Hell, I made it through several medal detectors in airports with a pound of metal in my ankle, including; Houston and Atlanta...I even presented my little card to the guy with the wand and tried to explain to someone that I was supposed to set it off...LoL...B|:S...He waved me through...and me and metal in my ankle boarded the plane....:D

They let one guy take his hooknife through at Kansas City saying that the blade of the knife was permanently contained or something like that

As far as rigs go, the rig and the Cypres pose no hazzard and the new Cypres card clearly identifies a rig and what it looks like going through the x-ray machine.

The real problem is they won't let TSA use profiling when screening passengers.

Profiling? Yea, racial profiling is great... (scarcasm)
And where did you see in my post that the Cypres poses a threat to anyone? And where on the card is there anything reassuring? It tells the screener what it should look like and that the cypres cannot be disconnected from the parachute system. Unless you have one that is different than mine. How does that help?

You know, I had second thoughts about making this post. I like being able to take my rig on the plane just as much as all of you do. As for taking away our freedom? Come on, look at everything else in this country. With freedom comes responsibility. And unfortunatly for us, the few that choose to abuse those freedoms make life harder on us. As for the xray machines checking for other things such as explosive materials, can you explain how an X-ray machine would somehow see that?

I'm probably the least "paranoid" person you've ever met. The point of this post was partial scarcasm which I didn't really bother trying to express. That point, being that the US government is going to many lengths and spending so much damn money on "securing our nation" that they fail to see these simple and minute possibilities that can occur.

As for the user who said I should find a new sport, you should open up your mind a bit. It's called an opinion. If you are having trouble accepting other people's opinions, I feel sorry for you.

It would be profiling of the likely terrorists. If biker gangs were doing it then I would want the TSA to pay special attention to those looking like hell's angels members. If little old grannies were doing it, then they should be more inconvenienced.

The constitution does not guarantee the right to not be offended.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Read the TSA web site. They use a risk assesment program to focus resources where they are most useful in addition to random multi-tiered layers of security through out the airport system. The x-ray machine is one part of the entire security process. If you think about it, the fact that yourself and other skydivers are able to take rigs as on-board luggage proves to me that the system does work.

You are carrying on something that has the potential to be a bomb and you are telling them they "can't open it up." Jesus. Think about that.

Ever carried a laptop PC on board? It looks more like a bomb than a cypres and you "can't open it up" to be absolutely certain it's not a bomb.

The 9-11 terrorists proved that you don't need to sneak a bomb on a plane. You just need some small, close quarters combat weapons, like a small knife, and enough people to control the aircraft. Then the aircraft and the Jet-A become the weapon.

As far as commercial avaition safety is concerned, statistically, I'm more worried about an aging fleet, old design flaws in flight control systems, and pilot error, leading to my death than any terrorist action.

Statistically, I'm more worried about slipping in the shower and splitting my head open than terrorism.

The TSA people manning the X-ray machines can swab down a rig if they need to so again the rigs and Cypres are no problem. The US Govt along with the manufacturers and the USPA went to great lengths to make sure as did Southwest Airlines behind the scenes.

I bet you didn't know that the lithium batteries in laptops are hazardous. The batteries that power the emergency track lighting on aircraft are also. The life vests under the seats have CO-2 cartridges in them.

Cypres-style cutters are used in the space programs of many countries to deploy the solar wings on satellites. They are harmless period.

As far as the US Govt securing our safety, there were a couple of cells of Middle Eastern Types taking flight training in the Houston and Fort Worth Texas areas. The scrammed after Sept. 11th. Where are they today?

I can see your point, but I do not want to check my rig and have someone who doesn't know what they are doing "investigate" it without me being there to see if they are tugging on wires, trying to snap pins, etc. which could be fatal when I jump. I want to take my rig with me on the plane so I can keep an eye on it. Also, my hook knife's design would enable me to cut someone's finger off but not kill them unless I broke the knife.

When I travel, I carry the TSA letter that you can print off from USPA.org and my Cypres card. I have had issues, but have always been willing to answer all questions and clarify misunderstandings calmly.

Edited for dyslexia spelling mistake.
