QuoteIf Bush's goal was to remove Saddam from power, it's done. There is no reason for us there now, never was. Bring the troops home ASAP and let the Iraqis run their country.
I wish that life was that simple.

QuotePayspecial attention over the next few months at what is said by France, Germany, and Russia. I have no doubt they are going to get real cooperative with the U.S. I suspect Saddam is going to be talking about their involvement in circumventing the U.N. sanctions. Should get interesting.
Now, that statement has some really interesting end results. Might be why they decided not to help. But of course, now they want in on the rebuilding of the country. Why? Money, Oil, the right thing to do? Someone tell me. Oh, yea, for "THOSE" of you who think oil is behind this, why hasn't anything been said about the Saudi Occupation for the past 13 years or so? Beer at 10 pm. Any Military member that ends up at Z-hills, stop by and see me (Patrick) and I'll buy the beer. GREAT JOB from one military member to all the others.

No shit, that's a good point. This will be a quantam leap in the art of "damage control"

I do appreciate Quade being bi-partisan in this thread by the way...my respect grows for thee.
The capture of Hussein had nothing to do with partisanship, so it would be silly of me to try to interject that here.
I woke up at about 5 am today and checked into CNN for some quick news and weather before heading out to the DZ. (Also made a quick scan of dz.com -- natch!)
On my drive out to Perris I tuned into NPR and they were replaying the Bremer / Sanchez presser complete and without interruptions. I could have swore the applause after Bremer announced "We got him" went on for what seemed like at least two full minutes. Really impressive. Sanchez gave a full account of how it all went down and I hung on every detail of their operation.
I was not as impressed by Hussein himself. For all of his "we will fight to the last man" posturing before the war, he really went down like a wimpering sissy. Reports are that he had a pistol and he didn't fire a single shot either at our guys or into his own head. What a humiliating pussy of a way to go out.
Actually, even though it would have been for the moment emotionally satisfying to have him dead, in the long run, it's probably better for our service people that he is alive and not a martyr. Hopefully it means less retaliatory suicide bombers headed their way.
I disagreed as to why we went to war, but once we did, the capture or kill of Hussein was really the only way we were ever going to have a hope of getting out cleanly.
Tomorrow or the next day I might go into a wild left coast tirade so that y'all don't think I haven't drifted too far to the right, but for now, I'd just like to thank the fine men and women that helped bring this bastard down.
Now, let's close this deal out and bring 'em home.

All those saying troops will be coming home now, I fear, are badly mistaken.

Saddam was hiding like a rat in a hole with no communication with the outside world.
At the moment our forces caught him -- I'll agree.
However, it's far too soon for you or I to tell if say, two hours earlier he wasn't in contact via satellite phone.
Also, whether or not he was actually and personally involved in running his side of things, it's clear that a portion of the Iraqi people thought he still had some power. Taking him out of the game as we've done clears up any ambiguity on that.
Our people probably won't be coming home -right now- as in today, but it does pave the way for bringing them home much, much sooner.

You might be

Story on the news this morning indicated he had several papers with names of folks on them. Well, as things would have it, the named folks were rounded up in Bagdhad and arrested, and may have been part of the insurgency.
Now, how much can we trust this? Dunno... it is a given that there are a lot of unhappy Iraqis who are carrying out some of the attacks. And frankly, I suspect there will be a spike for the next few weeks on attacks on our troops, but after that, I think it will slow down, and start to level out.
But it was an interesting blurb nonetheless. And I heard it on MSNBC, should anyone want to know. But I also haven't been able to find any corroboration of it (granted, I didn't look yet, either!).
In any event, the head bad guy is gone, and this will free up a whole lot of intel and info that will be very important to restoring peace - and rebuilding a country that has a wonderful culture and great history.
