AggieDave 6 #1 January 2, 2004 I just saw on /. that California has banned the use of Laptops/notbook computers (and other types of computers) in the front seats of automobiles. pilotdave 0 #6 January 2, 2004 I'd be SO pissed if they pulled that in CT or MA. I just got a new GPS system for my laptop. I will admit that restarting a locked up computer while doing 70+ on the highway is not something I want the guy in the next lane over doing, but I'd like to be able to do it myself. Mine will also work wirelessly with my palm pilot, so i could live without the laptop if i had to, but it would still suck. I used it yesterday for a trip. I picked up a wireless network at a red light. Thought about trying to check my email but decided that was a bad idea. Dave
happythoughts 0 #7 January 2, 2004 Sure, next thing they are going to ban applying makeup while driving. Wouldn't that be a silly law?

BillV has got to be pissed. I would be DELIGHTED to see cell phones BANNED from use by drivers. I have been nearly run off the road more times than I can count by idiots talking on the phone. The following is addressed to everyone that talks on the phone while driving: I know you think you can do it but guess what? You cant. Knock it the hell off before you kill me or someone else. I believe that cops should be able to pull you over if they see you talking on your cell phone and smash that phone into little useless bits right there in front of you, give you one of those "you are an idiot" smacks across the back of your head, and send you on your way. fundgh 0 #12 January 2, 2004 Does it bother you that I am posting from the front seat of my car, right now as I am driving?!And I am chatting with my buddy on the phone too! They teach us that stuff out here in Cali. If we don't learn it in High School, then our parents are responsible!...FUN FOR ALL!

billvon 3,120 #14 January 2, 2004 It's like anything else - it's how you handle it. When I fly, I talk a mile a minute to controllers while dealing with half a dozen instruments and managing an engine that takes a lot more care than any car engine. It just takes practice and attention. I've driven all over the US talking on a cellphone (satellite phone actually) during testing. I was one of those "can you hear me now? Good" guys. And what I found was that driving requires attention, not silence. A radio playing? A talk show? A passenger in the back seat you're chatting with? A voice on a cellphone? Not a problem. But if you have to look up a phone number, or dial a phone with a tiny keypad, or you're fighting with your girlfriend in the passenger seat, or the talk show is getting you so mad that you can barely see straight - then your attention is elsewhere, and that's where problems can occur. Talking on a cellphone with a good hands-free kit can be as safe or as dangerous as you make it. If you use it properly it's no more dangerous than talking to a passenger in the back seat. If you fumble with phone and charger and phone book while driving in stop and go traffic, expect an accident.

Sheenster303 0 #16 January 2, 2004 I think that cell phones should be banned by people getting checked out at a store. It is so rude when I'm trying to get information out of people when they are talking on their damned cell phone. Put the phone down for 2 minutes while you get checked out. It's really not that hard. I'm not going to ask you more than once if you have any coupons and if you miss me saying it and you do have them, well you're shit out of luck because I give no sympathy to people who think talking on their cell phone is more important than listening to me. If you give me more money than what is needed because you are not paying attention, well that is your bad and I'm keeping your damn money.I'm so funny I crack my head open! pilotdave 0 #17 January 3, 2004 I think there should be a test and a license for driving while on a cell phone. Some can do it, some can't. In NY you need a hands free kit to talk on a cell phone while driving. I think that's a bullshit law. Plugging a headset into a cellphone doesn't make it any safer. People still look up numbers and dial and all that. Just like you said, it's not the talking that's dangerous. I have no problem talking to controllers while busy doing other stuff when I fly, but I also wouldn't try to tune a VOR during a touch n' go or something. Distractions are a part of every flight test. On mine I was told to tune a VOR, identify it with morse code, and center the needle, all while turning around a water tower 1000 feet below. The trick of course is just to fly the plane and take a half hour to tune the radio if you need to. If you rush it, you'll bust your altitude or fly a lopsided circle. You won't swerve into oncoming traffic though. There are only a few times during a flight that a lapse of attention for one second will kill you.
