pilotdave 0 #1 January 10, 2004 Ok, I know most people will disagree with me (I assume), but here goes anyway. Please note this post is written at least slightly tongue in cheek. I HATE the "I need some vibes" threads, filled with half a million posts that just say (((((((((((((((((VIBES))))))))))))))))))). I have no problem with people venting or whatever, and I have no problem with anyone replying with kind words to make them feel better. But {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{VIBES}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} just pisses me off. I guess I don't really "believe in" vibes. I don't find that to be a valid way of expressing concern for another human being. I found them funny and kind of nice at first, but now it's like reading the same post over and over again. Anyone agree with me? And please understand I'm not suggesting that anyone that likes these threads should stop contributing. I'm perfectly capable of skipping any thread I don't want to read. But when it comes to someone being sick or getting injured, I usually like to read through the thread and see if anyone has an update. But I just have to wade through page after page of <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Doesn't anyone have an original way of saying "I care?" Those that have received [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[VIBES]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] appreciated the gesture I'm sure. But would actual personalized messages have been nicer, or are ////////////////////////VIBES\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ exactly what you needed to feel better? Muenkel 0 #3 January 10, 2004 Dave, You bring up a very valid question. I personally do not believe in vibes, but do believe in prayer. So when I see a request asking for vibes, I will usually say a prayer for that person's intention. I personally have asked for "vibes" here and I have found it comforting reading the replies and pm's when I was facing something challenging. Because of that, I try to always return the favor and respond to a vibes thread. Although it's really a prayer I am saying for the person. Also, I want to know if one of my friends is facing something scary and does not have the time to pm me. Just my opinion. 3ringheathen 0 #10 January 10, 2004 Vibes, prayers, positive thoughts, whatever. If I'm needing them, I don't actually expect any of them to change what's going on. If prayers work, where's that world peace we've been begging for for thousands of years? Regardless, it's always nice to know that someone cares enough to at least wish you well. Having said that, if you really care, send the affected person a personal e-mail. Loads of "me toos" are kind of anoying at best, and at worst come accross as insincere when posted to the world as opposed to the more personal approach. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. ACMESkydiver 0 #14 January 10, 2004 Quote Vibes, prayers, positive thoughts, whatever. ...that's my feeling. Sometimes I don't even know the person, so sending a personal message would be difficult...but I'd like to let them know that I sympathize with their situation and would like to contribute whatever I can to their healing... And I strongly believe in the power of concentrated positive thinking/prayer by the masses directed toward a single goal. It has been studied and proven in the cases of hospital patients; the ones that received prayer/concentrated positive thoughts improved faster/more completely. I'm not going to list a link to the research on that...I can't remember the source, and I don't need proof myself. I've seen it. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
dterrick 0 #15 January 10, 2004 Heya Dave: I too, am not one of those comfortable requesting or reading about PDA's (public displays of affection) be it a request for "vibes" or be it bragging about "personal and private" activities. Maybe I'm just a repressed and private individual. Maybe this is just a function of the way I was brought up, or maybe it is a function of the belief I formed when I was about 15 that "going to a 'Church' every week doesn't make you a "good" person if the other 6 days and 22 hours of the week you do as you see fit to get ahead of everybody else with no consideration of others' feelings or personal values.. I'd love to hear the opinion of someone of the Jewish faith (..or frankly any other denomination) as I understand (only) those of the Jewish Faith believe there is no "Hell" (counterpoint: anyone of the Muslim faith care to espouse the virtues of Martyrdom and Jihad?). As ignorant as I am to the intracies of those Beliefs, the Jewish perspective does seem much more closely aligned to that which I consider "Karma" - do unto others as you would have done unto you... hold family and friends as sacred gifts... etc. My belief, , sort-of Ayn Rand-ish in my mind (yes, I'm a bit of a reader an theologian), ultimately implies that we are masters of our own destiny, yet we should ever be wary of the results we may cause by our actions as they are all inexorably linked by our daily interaction, be it by direct intention or by accident. Sadly, I am presently struggling with a personal situation that (I think might) vindicate my belief that "what goes around comes around". Worse yet, it involves the misfortune of one of "us" and I struggle to reconcile my belief in Karma with the fact that the issue has also hurt others who do not deserve to be hurt, IMHO . The world, and Life, is complex, and I can only hope that someday we will all be allowed the chance to undertsand what This Life is really about. "We" all live such priveleged lives as Free People (skydivers, wherever you live, consider yourself as free as any "free" people on the planet) that any discussion about "Vibes" is really a request for sympathy to the priveleged by the priveleged, for the priveleged. Dare I mention Karl Jung and my curiosity of his concept of the Collective Uncoinscious and Archetypes? Anyone...? Bueller... Bueller? (sorry for the somewhat obscure reference to Ben Stein that dates me as a "30 something" skydiver ... and SERIOUS apologies to those that remember that show) Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

sdgregory 0 #19 January 10, 2004 I am with Muenkel on this one. Partially. I agree pilotdave, that just {{{{{{VIBES}}}}}}}} is meaningless. I think it allows a person to feel like they are caring and offering something when they really aren't. Now I know that some people actually really care and this is just their way of showing, but I would venture to say that most people put "vibes" because they think "Ah what the hell it ain't costing me nothing and at least I am showing I care." Give me prayers anyday. And I like to respond in kind. Since I cannot sit and talk with most off you if I see you need something I pray. It is a much more effective intercession and requires something of me. My time. Even if the person does not see it, God does and He honors that and can and often does answer those prayers for that person.
skybytch 273 #20 January 10, 2004 Quote Even if the person does not see it, God does and He honors that and can and often does answer those prayers for that person. That's great for those who believe in God. There are people who don't though. For them {{{VIBES}}} could translate into "I'm thinking about you" or "I'm sending healing energy your way" or "I'm sending you love and light"... or it could just be a way of raising their post numbers. To me it's all the same. If I need 'em, I'll take prayers, "vibes", healing energy, love and light, and/or a "blessed be." The universe hears us regardless of what words we use to make our requests. And I have to think that anyone offering "vibes" is doing so because they mean it, in whatever way goes along with their belief system.

chuteless 1 #22 January 10, 2004 I dont think there is such a thing as "vibes": (vibrations) that can have a significant influence on someone many miles away from a proposed sender, but to me its the thought and short time that it took to let someone know you cared enough to PM a remark. With my recent hospital stay, I sure was feeling low, and when I got home and found out that about 60 people in the skydiving family cared enough to send a get well wish I was truly uplifted, and it made me feel somewhat better. I was amazed, and it provided me with a "beginning" of getting better. It probably helped more than the anti-biotics.One person even offered me a "HUG". I didnt actually feel her arms around me, but I sure appreciate the suggestion. I havent had a hug like that since before my wife ran off with another guy more than 10 years ago. I dont feel it matters whether its referred to as "vibes" or "get well", its the thought and brief time it took to show concern, care, and that is important at a time like that. For those whohave a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, prayers can make a difference. For others, its nice that they show care..... I certainly appreciated both Bill Cole D-
