So, he will serve the remainder of his term in Congress and then return to the private sector.

He was always far more moderate in practice than he preached in my opinion. A bit of a pragmatist perhaps. Unfortunately, he could not play that role fully and integrate that into a political party that has been moving farther and farther left, resulting in loss of control of Congress.

Quote

"This didn't come out the way we wanted," Gephardt said after the caucus results were tallied. "But I've been through tougher fights in my life. When I watched my 2-year old son fight terminal cancer and win, it puts everything into perspective."

He was first elected in the 1970s (76?) and won the Iowa caucus in 1988 interestingly.

Either way, his service is coming to an end, and the democratic party is not the better for it.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
