Geek Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Sooo...I just upgraded my computer to windows 2000 and all seems to be fine except for one thing: I am getting no sound from WAV files, but I am getting sound from windows media files. I use a C-Media PCI device. I've tried updating the drivers for the device (and Microsoft lists it as 2000 compatible). Any idea as to why this might be happening?

did you upgrade from 98 or 95? i had a similar problem as i did it to get xp from 98. i simply formated it reinstalled from cd then i had no problems. you could also try the repair thing on the cd(if the 2000 has it).

A couple of things:

1) Are you saying that your Window media player opens, plays wmv files, but not WAV files? What happens when you try to play them. Does it appear to be playing them, or do you get an error message and if so, what does the message say?

2) I saw that you answered the question about the volume control, and saw that you said you checked it. - Just want to be sure we are talking about the same thing here - We're talking about the volume adjustment window where you see several vertical sliders - from left to right named: Master Volume / Wave Balance / SW Synth Balance... etc

This is where the wave balance volume control needs to be full up -

Also, short of the Service Pack upgrade, I'd suggest you up grade your Windows media player to the latest version. If you upgraded using a Windows 2000 CD, you DEFINITELY do not have the latest version.

Some custom sound cards install their own volume center - which in effect, replaces what used to be controlled exclusively by the Windows panel.

Make sure that your sound card software did not install a volume center of it's own. If it did, you need to make adjustments in there -

Also, when you said you installed drivers - did you install the full recommended setup for the sound card - or did you just install the drivers? Some have both - and it may make a difference depending on what the card is looking for -

DOH! Problem solved. Strange: when I first upgraded the computer, the sound was fine. I assumed it was only the WAV files that were not processing correctly because I had watched a few movies with no sound issues. So I tried watching them again...no sound. So I went to the back of the computer and switched my speaker jacks. That fixed it. I wonder why that happened? :S
