If I use a packer at the DZ and I have a mal....are they financially responsible? (even in part?)

Nope.

Guess what? Malfunctions on profesional packers packjobs are 99% never their fault. Really.

1) I wouldn't want to lose a friend because I made them pay for my canopy.

I don't need friends that wouldn't offer.

Quote

2) I wouldn't approach said friend, I would expect friend to come to me with a 'payment' plan

I would give them time to find it, but if they don't make the offer, I'd ask.

3) I sure as hell wouldn't want friend to think 'Oh, shit, if I chop this I gotta buy it. I wonder if I can land this line over' and go in.

Why would they think any differently than if they were using their own gear that they have to pay for?

Quote

Nothing is assumed, set the guidelines before you loan your gear.

That's the best idea. Say, "Here you go, if you chop it and lose it, you buy it. Ok?"

not even in the least. you take FULL responsibility when you get a pack job...period.

blues,
arlo

then why should the person who loaned the rig to her friend be in any way financially responsible if there is a mal?
I know I'd feel bad...but that shouldn't make me financially responsible.
(like the tire analogy...if I loan my car to someone and it gets a flat and they wreck it..it should still be up to them to fix my car)

It depends, If the flat was because the tires were crap then it isn't their fault. If the accident was because the brakes failed because they haven't been replaced in 200k miles it isn't their fault. If you borrow something you should return it in the same or better condition, that is the way I was raised. If I borrow a rig, I either trust the existing pack job or I repack it before the jump. Either way I'm responsible for the result good or bad

The only time I borrowed a rig I had a horseshoe (canopy/lines wrapped around my foot). I chopped, landed the reserve with main still tangled in D-Bag on my foot. I lost the freebag, and handles. I felt REALLY bad about it, I paid for the freebag, new handles, new reserve repack, main inspection (incase any lines were damaged) and about $100 extra for the inconvience of being without a rig for a week while the handles/freebag were ordered. I still feel like shit about it. If I lost her main I would have bought her a new one (of her choice) even if I had to sell my gear to finance it.

because it is understood that if you borrow someone's gear and you screw it up (i.e., chop, asslanding on the runway scraping the rig, anything), it's on you to fix/replace it.

the most important reason is because it's the right thing to do. that seems pretty obvious to me...maybe it's not so with some people. :S

Right on.

I wouldn't borrow gear from a friend OR a gear store that I couldn't afford to replace if I chopped. I'd have to charge it, but I could do it.

You don't want to be up there thinking "I can't chop because I can't afford the repack or if I lose the canopy or freebag..."

You should not put yourself in a situation where finances help you make a life or death decision. If you can't afford to replace it, don't jump it. If you do lose it, you'd better replace it.

I've had TWO friends borrow my car and crash it. My reaction: "Are you ok?" when the answer was "yes" my next question was "is my car ok?" When the answer was "no" I didn't even have to ask them to get it repaired. They simply asked the name of the shop I would like it towed to (Solesbee Automotive in Yorba Linda, please) and said they would cover the bill. AND they even covered a rental car for me during the few days my car was out of commission... all without me even having to ask . now THAT'S a friend.

another chop at Z-Hills. major vibes to ya.... My friend had to cut away this past week during a CReW event (kinda my fault)... hopefully they'll find both canopies.

You sound like you think you're disagreeing with me...and you're not.

I said that the friend should be responsible. Ivan asked who lasted packed it...I said why does it matter, the person who borrowed it should still be responsible..
and now you're agreeing with me, in a disagreeing manner. ;)

I agree with you....she (friend who borrowed it and chopped it) should be responsible financially..

My personal rule for borrowing equipment from people is: If I break it, I bought it. So if I would chop your main and it got lost.. Well, I guess I'll have to get you a new one.

Exactly, and not only that, but here jump my shit till i can replace yours.:)

There's only a handful of people that I'd lend things like my rig or my car to. I wouldn't want to deal with the possible pain in the ass for other people.

I lent my camera to a roomate a couple years ago and gives it back to me minus the lens cap, conversation went something like this:

RM: "Oh hey, here's your camera, thanks."
ME: "Err, do you know what happened to the lenscap?"
RM: "What lenscap?"
ME: "The lenscap that was on it when I gave it to you..."
RM: "Oh, I didn't notice, I'll stop by the store and get a new one."

After a few weeks of reminding him I just gave up and decided it'd be easier to just never lend him anything anymore.

Rober is great. When i had my cutaway, my main was in clear sight, but unreachable. It was in the closest tree to the DZ, but in McNasty's yard. We could see it, but not reach it. RObert talked to McNasty and got the main from the tree before he could scarf it up into his barn full of skydiving treasures.
