Ok it's 46 in my house...something is wrong

Recommended Posts

I just checked and it's 46 in my house... Now I understand why the people before me moved out and also why my gas bill was $200 while I was gone for a month. So I'm running a space heater in the computer room and then taking it upstairs and have an electric blanket...neither of them help though when the power goes out all the time

I need some suggestions because

a)I can't afford big bills like that
b)I have to keep the heater running of the pipes will freez

It's an old house, 100yrs old, plaster, crappy windows etc. What's a good fix to keep the heat in?

The plastic sheeting around the windows has helped me in the past. I assume that you have radiators for heat, have they been bled lately? If you can get the air out of the system they'll operate much more efficiently. You should be able to find something at Lowes or HomeDepot to automatically bleed the system, they're cheap, I'm told.

Good luck.

duck tape ( QUACK!) . go around every window and feel for air leaks, then any doors you don't use. then base ment if any. you got a basement? crawl space? water pipes won't freeze if you keep them running. if you don't pay water bill you might want to turn heater of and electric heat the room your in , and turn a few faucets on just a bit. best electric heater are those oil filled radiator

if you tell me more about your house i'll tell you more what you can do. but basically, insulation is the thaaang.

oh and pushups and think warm.

good luck

Make sure your lady is near by, Kansas...;)

Women are proven to keep men warm, and at least one pipe won't freeze for sure...doh, was that out loud?? :$:):P:o:D

my lady lives in MN, even colder up there. Difference is though that they make houses up there that actually withstand the cold!!!

And yeah there are 2 AC units in the house. One in the basement and one on the 2nd floor. Each one is seperate. I don't have so much of a problem upstairs as my room is a loft that used to be the atic. Heat rises and there is insulation up there. The rest of the house is insane, I can run the heat and it just keeps going and going

bro you have to manage all the air gaps, get stuff to cover the gaps at the bottom of the door, or where ever you may have a gap.
Go to the feed store and by STRAW bails of hay and place them around the foundation of the house.
Cover those windows ghetto style with Plastic and get the drafts out.
Open the cabnet doors under the sinks so the pipes get what warmth there is.
Lastly call the landlord/slumlord or a heat and air dude and get them to fix the furnace..
Stay warm, my old house is the same way.. burr

Move to Canada! It's -50°c right now (including the wind chill factor)

Just kidding.....

I know how you feel... My utility bill, is going sky high right now.

Do you keep water running at a trickle all the time (that will help keep the pipes from freezing)?

If you use a combo of towels and plastic around the windows and door-bottoms (the doors that may not get much use that is), that may help too.

Your local hardware store may carry some insulating window "plastic" which uses adhesive around the window molding, then you use a hair drier to shrink the plastic to provide tension, and insulation.

Once you done something to the "leaks", see how that helps. Then, find two or three Black & Decker Heater Fans (BDHF200). They have their own thermostats, a host of safety features (protection from tip-over/fire etc).

Just throwing some ideas out there...

Edit to add: Oh yeah, one more thing -- move to Southern California. It was sunny and in the 70s in LA today. B|

i went to school (U of MN) through one winter in minneapolis. my apt was colder than imaginable. I complained to my landlord. He said "what do you expect, its the coldest winter in 50 years!"

Yeah, right, I thought.....I had always heard about MN winters and had been expecting the worst.

Turns out, it WAS the COLDEST winter in 50 years! (around 1977):S

My house is at tropical level right now since I don't pay utilities. Ya got to love it, I can have a freezer in the summer and walk around in shorts in the winter;)

What kind of insulation is in the floor of the basement and in the attic.. buy some of the R-31 attic blanket stuff.. lay it down thick.. especially around the eaves.. (sides)

Walls can be insulated with the blow in stuff by many companies.. usually some type of cellulose based stuff..they drill holes and fill the area between the inside and outer walls...best thing to do to raise the R value in older homes with plaster and lath.

Closing off all the drafts is a good thing around doors and windows.
Storm windows...2 layers of glass.. new windows with thermo panes or do the ghetto thing with DUCT tape and plastic.

Storm Doors.. again 2 doors is better than one..inside door and external one with thermopanes.. as well as good seals around the door to cut out the drafts.

Check for drafts around the electrical outlets.. they have little inserts that will seal them...

When summer comes.. CALK with butyl.. all the gaps around windows and door frames, Also do not forget the sills where the house sits on the foundation.

Hope that helps.

Nope no fireplace in the house. I can't add anything to the walls as they are just solid plaster. I went around and duct-taped all the cracks around windows and doors. So far the house has stayed at an amazing 45 all morning and hasn't dropped. This could be also because it's warming up outside a bit as well.

Some of the windows have an outer windows, some of them dont'. The ones that don't have the storm glass or whatever over them, had frost on them... But is is normal to have frost on the INSIDE of the house and not the outside?

I'm going to get plastic and put it around the windows that are just by themselves. Need more duct-tape. I'm gonna take a picture later on of the house, it looks rather funny with blue, white and grey tape around every freaking crack in the world lol

I guess they're right, crack does kill lol
