JDBoston 0 #26 January 27, 2004 I couldn't disagree more. For every story like this you can find 100 where the seatbelt was the difference between a bloody nose/bruise, and DEATH. Instead of using that story as evidence that seat belts don't always matter, I would use it as evidence that "holy shit this person has a charmed life - better start buckling up now!" Wearing a seat belt is about as close to a no-brainer as any personal behavior issue could possibly be, other than not drunk driving maybe. Joe

slug 1 #30 January 27, 2004 A while ago I got in the back seat of a minivan with a family of 5or 6 Those folks never used them so I couldn't find my set and wouldn't let the the driver pull out of the driveway until I found my seat belt (under the seat) and got mine snapped in. A long time ago while in the USAF we air evacated a older american couple from turkey that had been in a car accident. I still remember the Husband walking on the plane he had been driving and wearing his seat belt. His wife and life long patner was carried on in a streatcher her head and face covered in Bandages. The women recieved medical care in flight from military Dr's and nurses, lots of units of blood during the flight to germany. It was unusaul for us to carry civilians. We asked one of the escorts what happened. When the couple got into the accident the passengers door opened and the lady was ejected and slid down the road on her head and face. Massive head and face trauma. When you see two people that were in the same accident one without a scratch (seatbelt) the other critical (no seatbelt) it makes a person think. Prior to the accident at Perris I thought as long as I had my back against the bulkhead I would be OK. Wrong! When the bird crashed the weight of all the bodies moving forward crushed the folks with their backs against the wall. Some jumpers don't like wearing their seatbelts on T.O. to bad their not only playing with their own nickel but everyone elses that's sitting in front of them. R.I.P. eeneR 3 #33 January 27, 2004 Yes to both....I was in a car accident sept 03' going 35 thru and intersection a car full off old ladies turned left in front of me...I t-boned them, totaled my Honda, totaled their Cavalier, and they had to cut the passenger out of the car with the jaws of life and she had a busted pelvis. I got of the car completely on my own. 2nd degree burns on my right arm and some residual back problems...every cop and paramedic on the scene asked me to verify that I was the driver of the Element, as they couldnt believe I walked out of it.She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto

Like I said, this was before the law of having to wear them (which I do). Antithesis 0 #41 January 27, 2004 I wear my seatbelt in the car every time because I don't want a ticket. I have been in accidents ..once head on by a semi truck @ 65 mph .. (he fell asleep and drifted into my lane) and didn't have a seatbelt on ... and walked away I think that a seatbelt is one of those things that should be your right to choose to wear or not.. Lee03 0 #42 January 27, 2004 Yes, I wear seatbelts. Like several others here, I was in an accident once and if I had not had a belt on, I would have been dead, according to the policeman that was at the scene of the accident. Common sense dictates that they should be worn. I'm a pilot, and I have to wear them while flying. Race car drivers wear them, just makes sense that they should be worn!-------- To put your life in danger from time to time ... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities. --Nevil Shute, Slide Rule
jessd 0 #43 January 27, 2004 Yes - I always wear my seatbelt. I just wish I could convince everyone I know to wear theirs too. I was in a car accident 13 years ago. Had I had my seatbelt on, my injuries would likely have been less severe. Instead, I suffered a fractured skull and 5 broken teeth. Just two years ago and a ton of cash out of pocket, I was able to get my teeth completely fixed. But, the headaches from the fracture will be with me forever. dterrick 0 #44 January 27, 2004 Ach, ya wuss! Be a Man and put yer crotch strap on too As a long time sports car racer I agree about how 4 points make you feel secure. My TR4 had (has?) fixed length 3 point belts and even those are an improvement over the 'modern' retractable type. My TR6 had the standard issue 3 points and when I wrote it off ( newly licenced driver turned left inot oncoming traffic - and I was that traffic) the belt did not snug immediately and my back didn;t recover for about 5 years. I wrote off my vintage racer GT-6 on the track (full race gear) and all I can say about the crash is that it was less painful than a brisk canopy opening - at least physically Something many on the list might easily miss is that an improperly fitted seat belt can do as much harm to you as no belt at all - different but equally bad. But hey, most people who feel that a seatbelt is "too restrictive" also don't like challenging the 1G barrier on their daily commute either. sdgregory 0 #47 January 28, 2004 Seat belts are for pussies. I know I am not the norm but 1.) I have been in five accidents and got pretty hurt in three of them. The other two I did not. The three I got hurt, I was wearing seatbelts. The damn things never go over the shoulder the way they should and since I am short they went right across my neck. Same result all three times. 2.) It is my right not to wear one, it is a bullshit law and I exercise my right to protest peacefully by not wearing it. 3. I take a bigger risk by jumping from a plane than I do driving. (Let's see where this one leads!) Even without a seat belt.

Aviatrr 0 #49 January 28, 2004 Always. It has saved my life twice in a car. Once when I was a passenger in a head on collision(dead ass drunk and passed out, too), and another time when I was a passenger in a hotel van. We had left the airport, on the way to the hotel...and some schmuck clipped the front end after passing on a 2 lane road. Driver overcompensated, crossed into the dirt on the opposite side, and rolled. Several times. One of the Flight Attendents was not wearing a seatbelt - she broke both arms and her collarbone. Everybody else walked away with nothing worse than cuts and bruises - we were wearing seatbelts. Mike
