Seatbelts, Do you wear yours?

Recommended Posts

Of course I wear one, it is the law. But more importantly, I make my kids wear one(3 year old in child seat) I see way too many parents where I live with their kids not belted and it makes me sad.
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.

Always. Car or airplane (although I take it off at about 1000' in the jump plane ;)).

Used to never wear it in the car. Then my ex requested that I do so. A year or so later a guy made a left in front of me on the highway and I t-boned him. If I hadn't been wearing the seatbelt...

Used to never wear it in the jump plane either. Then the Otter crashed at Perris back in '93.

yes, absolutely, every single time.

I've even managed to convince my cousins that the car won't go unless everyone's seatbelt is fastened.

My reason:
When my family and I were heading to Colorado on a ski trip, we saw a horrendous accident. An older man was driving, and completely missed the bend in the highway. The car kept going straight, off the edge of the highway, down the embankment, flipping over two or three times, and finally landing on its wheels.

We were the only ones around, and both myself and my mom have some emergency skills (she was a medical technologist, and I was a lifeguard), so we stopped to help. My dad and my brother became useful by calling 911 on the cell phones and getting some real help out there.

We were about an hour north of Barstow, so the nearest help was at least that far away.

The man was sitting up in his seat, talking. He had a bit of a cut on his forehead, and maybe a minor concussion, but other than that, was fine.

His wife, however, had not been wearing her belt. She'd taken it off to get comfortable while she was napping on the long drive. She was thrown through the windshield, landed about thirty feet from the car, with major head trauma. Blood everywhere. She was conscious and speaking, but barely.

We managed to get some of the bleeding stopped and then, because her other injuries were on the side that was in contact with the ground, we couldn't do much more than keep her calm. My dad and my bro kept the gentleman in his vehicle and wouldn't let him move til emergency personnel got there.

They treated the gentleman for his head wound and talked him into coming into the ER for a checkup just to make sure there was no other head trauma. His wife, however, had to be airlifted out and flown immediately to the hospital. She was not in good shape.

As he prepared to drive away, the EMT told me "thank god at least HE was wearing his belt. I hate going out on calls where we hear about a seat belt not being worn. We already know what we're going to find."

My dad left a business card with the gentleman, but we never did hear whether or not his wife made it.

Two people, in the same car accident. The one with a seatbelt walked away. The one without had to get flown out, and the prognosis was not good. That is pretty strong evidence for the effectiveness of seat belts, wouldn't you think?

always.

The problem is, in my car i have FiA 4 point harness'. After wearing those i just dont feel safe enough in a normal seatbelt :S

There was an ocassion a while back in that car where i was taking a mate home and he was having difficulty getting the harness on (its not the easiest thing if your not used to them) and he said, nah dont worry about it. I made it him put it on. As we were on the way home we were run off the road at about 80 mph. I swerverd to avoid a car that had migrated onto our side of the road, cliped the curb and we spun 3 times before ending head first in a ditch.

Handy that i'd made him but the harness on

After you work in the ER you will always were it! One day we had a patient from a T-bone car crash, she had hers on and walk out of the ER under her own power, the next day we had a patient in another crash, same type but no seat belt, SHE DIED! Lesson learned!B|

i always wear mine. if i don't put one on, a thought will bug me until i do. i think "what if i was to get into an accident?"

after wearing it every time i get into a vehicle, it feels weird not to wear it, like i am exposed.

Always ... nuf said?

It's like wearing a helmet while biking (or motorcycling, skiing, etc, etc). Most of the time it's not needed. But when it is, things usually happen so fast that we can't even react. I can't recall where a seat belt has ever saved my bacon, but I know of at least two instances (one on a mountain bike, one on a motorcycle) where a helmet has saved me from certain death (or one hell of a headache). And seat belts are no different.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

How about : Almost always and I forgot the other day and the nice police man reminded me.

He was "Too" happy. He introduced himself very politely - explained what i had done wrong - after all was said and done he even offered his hand for a handshake and wished me a "wonderful day".:|

Still gonna cost me. I usually do wear them though.[:/]

I have been in several car accidents where the seatbelt saved my ASS!

Once in 1980 or so My Mother was Driving and when she hit the brakes they locked up and we went sliding all over the place because the road was wet. We ended up hitting a light pole backwards.

Spring Break 1988 I was checking out the scenery ;) and rearended these guys. I was not going that fast but my friend who refused to wear the seatbelt hit the windsheild with his head and his right arm was sliced open by the side mirror. Oh and his head was cut open as well. His knees left an impression in the dashboard.

Driving home from Oklahoma 1990 I fell asleep and rolled my car. I was hanging upside down in the seatbelt. Once again not a scratch on me. The car was totalled.

1997 I was driving too fast and the tires went off the pavement which then caused me to lose control and wreck. NOt a scratch on me. $3000 in damage to vehicle.

1998 on my Birthday I took too much Nyquill and once again fell asleep at the wheel. I hit a tree at approximately 50MPH. This one messed me up a little but if I had not had my seatbelt on I would have been dead for sure. I have pictures of this one. Maybe I will scan them and try to post them.

All of these incidents I was wearing my seatbelt. I was able to walk away from all of them.

Maybe if they see the pictures of my truck they will believe!

always wear one. The ONE time that I took it off to take off my jacket (I was passenger), we got in a car accident. My head cracked up the windshield and my knee was sliced up by the dash. I think if we had been going any faster, I would have gone through the windshield. I was so mad, because seriously, i always wear my seatbelt!

Funny thing. The same guy who requested that I wear one refused to wear one when he was driving a tow truck. One day he hit a berm on a windy narrow two lane highway and rolled the truck. Twice. Had he been wearing a seatbelt he wouldn't have been able to manuever himself into the only position that kept him reasonably unhurt - had he been confined to the drivers seat by the seatbelt he'd have been crushed. As it was he came out of it with a concussion and some nasty bruises and scrapes.

I personally think it's 50/50. When it's your time, you're gonna go regardless.

A seatbelt saved my life when I was 12...even though in the middle of the accident I unfastened it.

When the jeep rolled, I freaked out thinking I'd hit my head, so I grabbed at something to hold on...which was my seatbelt..[:/] I unlatched it. Docs speculate that I must have had it on for the first revolution though, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to bring me back...on the second revolution I hit my head against the roof and was knocked out and had a blood clot on my brain and broke my collar bone...16 year old friend's sister that was driving had to give me CPR until ambulance came...what a horrid memory for 3 young girls...:(

-but I'm Ok now! :):D:D
