Questions for anyone with a website...

Recommended Posts

Just a couple of question for all those who own/run/have a website of any sort...

How much would you consider a reasonable amount to pay (per month or year) for hosting for a small-medium sized website? I think there are quite a few people on here who have one, whether it's a personal site, a DZ site or whatever else, so I thought it might be a good place to ask.

Also, if you know the answer to these, how much webspace (Mb) and bandwidth (Mb/month) do you use, approximately?

The reason I ask is because I'm about to start selling webspace on my servers, and would like to know what people consider reasonable prices, etc....

I hope it's OK to post about businessy things on here...I guessed it would be as long as I don't promote my own particular business.

Thanks

I run a bunch of websites www.thepinkmafia.com and www.badfishfreefly.com among them, and I pay around $8.95 a month per site for hosting (with spectacular customer service) and get 50 mgb of space and 2 gigs of bandwidth per month. I use most of the space and about half of the bandwidth (unless we're hosting special video presentations - then I buy an extra month's worth)
pm me if you need more info - pleased to help
Pete Draper,

Just because my life plan is written on the back of a Hooter's Napkin, it's still a life plan.... right?

I have several sites... Bodyflight Network, last year transferred an average of 174mb per day... CarboneZone average 170mb per day... most smaller sites don't even get into the mb range...
In MY experience, the hardest thing to deal with is providing pop3 email boxes.
If it's your VPS, then consider that you'll be the one needing to actually fix it if something goes wrong... providing seperate client CGI directories and scripts amongst other things to be competitive... it's different than if your buying hosting space from some other company who installs the SQL for you...
I have my own VPS's through NTT/Verio, and I'm the root access administrator. I cannot sell space as cheaply as these other guys are buying it, but it's still worth it to me to have the root access. And I still have a list of clients quite long...
Hope that helps...

Thanks for the replies so far everyone....

Bodyflight.Net .... I've designed quite a few sites for people, and have ended up hosting them aswell, so kind of have this reseller account with a company that I'm not reselling at the moment....thought I'd give it a go. They look after the servers for me and get everything installed, so I've got all the control panels, POP3 email and all that in place (unfortunately they charge quite a bit more for databases as they're only on dedicated servers for MySQL), so I'm really just trying to do a bit of research before I come up with some prices. The idea is for small to medium sites, nothing too scarily large. Thanks a lot for the advice.

Anyone else with a site....more replies are welcome....

I host a load of sites, from personal ones to sites for customers. I used to use a variety of services from pay-per-month to 'unlimited bandwidth' deals - these are usually good if you don't know initially how much b/w you're going to use and aren't after lots of bells and whistles. I run a server business now though, so host them in-house on a nice fast line. It's cheaper this way if you have a LOT of sites, and also gives you complete control over the settings as you set the server up how you like it, and have pretty much unlimited options on languages, features, backend coding etc. Not a cheap option if you're only hosting one or two sites though.. I pay around £200 a month per server hosted on this line [:/]
