I don't see what looks have to do with being president. It would matter to me if he were using our tax dollars to pay for it, but it would not suprise me. I think some folks would do or say anything just to get into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

BTW, Is that Courtney Love in your Avatar?

Before September 26, 1960 you would have been correct. Since that time, it's been incredibly important -- unfortunately.

Still don't see how looks can help anyone run the country any better.

It doesn't. It helps them get elected because (and I swear to god this is the truth), some people vote for candidates based on how they look.

Yes, people ARE that stupid.

Are you sure about that? You know that I try to refrain from politics on this site, because you will get your head ripped off and someone will shit down your neck if you say " the wrong thing" I know that you are a moderator, but be careful how you say things!-Caress

If the job is mainly foreign policy, how do you know which little, petty, small minded dictator you have to deal with will judge others?

Or, maybe appearance is huge in some cultures. Maybe that bias was once anthropoligically based for a real reason. Maybe it's just shallow junk.

In some cultures, being rather fat is a sign of success and good judgement. But in that history, being fat meant you were a good provider and successful in finding food. So it made sense at the time and is now carried into today as a social norm and there is a level of respect in having someone walk up to you and say "Hi, you are fat". It's happened to a co-worker and he had to find out just what that meant. It was a big complement.

So yes, certain aspects of appearance might make you more effective.

Problem is, you can't predict if they would respect someone ugly, thin, fat, masculine, feminine, etc. And our leaders deal with multiple and sometime conflicting cultures.

And I'm not saying it's right that appearance might mean something, just possible.

well it is a popularity contest, and since we let anyone who has been breathing long enough vote, what do you expect??

should we let every passenger decide who flies the plane? based solely on personal opinions, not on any actual understanding about how the plane flies or the qualifications of the each perspective pilot... just pick the one with the best face, voice and (most importantly) promotional team

on a somewhat related note, do you think music has gotten better since the proliferation of video? of course not..the sound doesn’t matter its all about the look….

appearance is everything in the modern world, no matter how much anyone wishes to pretend otherwise...style and perception over substance every time, in quick, persuasive, easily digestible sound bites so the public doesnt have to stop chewing the cud or notice the fences they are being herded thru...

Anyway, there are a ton of studies on how a person's proportions, features, etc effect the receptiveness of others and how they treat them. Most are based on elements having to do with hunting, gathering, and procreation. It's interesting.

Quade I wouldn't say they solely vote for a president b/c of his looks but it helps. Your Nixon example is the best; also remember how so many women felt that Clinton was more attractive than Bush in 1992.

Also think, this country would never elect a man in a wheel chair . . . today

Is there something wrong with the way I qualify my statements? ;) You're the second person in as many days that hasn't recognised just how carefully I try to construct them.

Nope there is nothing wrong with your qualified statement. I am simply expressing my doubt that there are any people who vote solely based on aesthetics. However, the mistake I'm making is giving more credit to people than deserved. Because there are people that vote for candidates simple because of their political affiliation.
