"Costocon-what!??"

Recommended Posts

So for the past four days i have been having chest pains. Got so bad on the 2nd day that i almost took myself to the ER, instead i went to bed hoping id wake up and it would feel better..but it didn't -instead i woke up in tears because of the pain.

So off to the doctor i went....i sat there in pain while waiting for the doctor...he came in and i explained my symptoms...aching chest, sharp piercing pain right down the center (pretty much in line with my belly botton), extremely painful to breathe, a little painful to move, and VERY painful to touch. He asked if i was sick or had been lifting anything and i said no. Then he had me remove my shirt and i had to sit there shirtless in the freezing cold-stupid doctor. He pressed on my chest and got a very loud "OW" outta me. To which he stupidly replied, "did that hurt?" I told him, "no it tickled" I dont think he appreciated my sarcasm...oh well...i had to laugh at something.

Anyway, so after a little more of listening to me breathe and pressing on my chest (which HURT!) he told me "you have Costocondritis"

"Costocon-what!??" I said.

He proceded to tell me Costocondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage and muscles between the breastbone and ribs...and i was gonna be in pain for awhile. 3-6 minimum, prpbably more like 6-8[:/] No strenuous activity, relax a bit, and take 600 mg of advil 3 times a day.The pain may come and go, but for the most part, its gonna last awhile.

Anyone else ever have this? He said its fairly common. Im just wondering what it was like for others and what i have to expect for the next few weeks...anything would be appreciated!

I had it in high school - soccer-related injury. I didn't learn about it till that night, when I woke up with it hurting to breathe, move, touch, etc.

Mine was only crippling a couple of days. I found out that exercise was the only thing that helped me (though it still hurt).

Hoep it goes well for you.

Ah...Tietze's Syndrome...

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/costochondritis.htm

snippet: Why or how does a person get costochondritis?

The risk of developing costochondritis increases with any physical activity that causes trauma or strain to the ribcage. It is a benign condition usually of short duration that resolves completely. Sometimes though it can recur or become persistent.

Perhaps when your chute opens? Undo stress repeatedly...just a thought...

hope you feel better.
