jdthomas 0 #1 January 29, 2004 Just venting my frustration as I move into my 3rd day with no water.. well it's not to say that I don't have water. The plumbers under my house right now will tell you that I have plenty of water coming from that now broken pipe! Another one of the reasons I am growing to dislike winters and living in old houses!www.greenboxphotography.com
EdC 0 #2 January 29, 2004 They make a heat tape for mobile homes with similar problems where the water supply line may be exposed to freezing temperatures. The tape wraps around the pipe and then plugs into a standard outlet. Insulation may be another fix, but hind sight is 20/20. Big Ed

diablopilot 2 #4 January 29, 2004 Leaving the water running just a little bit can prevent problems too.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
caress 0 #5 January 29, 2004 I can sympathize, I've come home just as one burst under my first house here, and I slid on my knees right under the house and shut off the water. I was so lucky to catch that. The funny thing was, I was walking from my car and I heard it go. I also caught my neighbors once too, I heard the water shooting against the skirting. I shut their water off , but not before they had a skating rink in the livingroom.(better than the whole house)I hope that you get that problem fixed up quik fast, and in a hurry. hang in there. Things will start to thaw before you know it! I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.
EdC 0 #6 January 29, 2004 That would work as well, sometimes they leak enough on their own. Big Ed
usedtajump 1 #7 January 29, 2004 Had a pipe burst in the well house at the farm in Kentucky last winter and had an ice skating rink in the back yard before we found out where the water pressure went. I wrapped the well house pipes in the hot wrap mentioned in a post above and have had no further problems. The older I get the less I care who I piss off. jdthomas 0 #8 January 29, 2004 Well the plumbers are gone and I have new water lines, some kind of expansion line that will freeze if could enough but will tend not to break but expand. One of the guys who was under the house in the cold wet mud noticed a big gap in the foundation due to the house setteling, so that has a temp fix until I can get under there and fix the place. Too bad no skating rink in the back yard, just under the house!! No I can rest eay until the bill arrives!www.greenboxphotography.com
Nutz 0 #9 January 29, 2004 Well, I live in Alabama but, I have the wellhouse well insulated and it has never frozen there. It froze once when I left the foundation vents open on the north side of the house. Also, where the pipe comes into the house it is only a couple of inches under the ground and that has gotten me as well, more dirt fixed that one. Basically, winter sucks! "Don't! Get! Eliminated!" jumpinfarmer 0 #10 January 30, 2004 Don't use heat tape if you can help it. There's a reason why they call it fire insurance test tape around here. Your better off letting the water run just a little. Also if the house is out where the wind blows, put some bales of straw or hay around the foundation. It looks like hell but it will keep the under side of the house rather warm. If they freeze again try to get them thawed before they burst. If there mettle pipes, copper, iron, exc. the best way is with an arc welder. Most plumbers or welders would be able to do that.
