Nightingale 0 #2 January 29, 2004 its amazing how much they understand... my mom's friend had an african grey. we were over for thanksgiving, and the bird was flying about, landed on Mariana's shoulder while she was checking the turkey. the bird made this clucking sound and said "oooh, lookit that poor bird!" Casurf1978 0 #6 January 29, 2004 My mom has a Blue and Gold macaw, well back in high school I had friends over and we watched Scarface. It was blaring and the bird was still up. Long story short, a few days later she had new favorite words and pharses. Mom wasnt too happy when she came back from her vacation and the bird greated her. mfrese 0 #7 January 29, 2004 That's pretty amazing...of course, if you got him to spend time at the drop zone, eventually all he'd be able to say is "Dirt dive", "swoop", "fuck", "shit", and "BEER"! And possibly "Crown" (or if Vinnie's around, "Patron"...)Doctor I ain't gonna die, Just write me an alibi! ---- Lemmy/Slash

marcandalysse 0 #11 January 29, 2004 <---This one's name is Amor! Check this out! Here's a PBS video about the most famous African Grey, Alex. Alan Alda teaches him a new word, and watches Alex surf the web using the new 'Interpet Explorer'!! http://pbs-saf.virage.com/cgi-bin/visearch?user=pbs-saf&template=play220ram.html&query=%2A&squery=%2BClipID%3A4+%2BVideoAsset%3Apbssaf1201&inputField=%20&entire=No&ccstart=1895395&ccend=2687958&videoID=pbssaf1201 By the way, notice the bird in the clicky link photo has plucked out some breast feathers. The smart ones are also somewhat neurotic! Ours wakes us up every morning exactly at 7am with a cheerful "Good Morning" and if we don't wake up fast enough to open her cage, yells out "Want to come out!!" Ours invents phrases too. Learned "Word to the Bird!" and "My name is Amor" and combined them into "Word to Amor"...
champu 1 #12 January 29, 2004 QuoteBy the way, notice the bird in the clicky link photo has plucked out some breast feathers. The smart ones are also somewhat neurotic! I noticed that too, it was a bad habit ours does on and off as well. A few nutty things our african gray Saturn does... -hangs upside-down from the top of it's cage, tucks her head under her wing and exclaims "Bat Girl!" loudly. -she will make microwave sounds, the doorbell, the telephone, she can immitate any of them spot on and if she catches you falling for it she'll laugh at you, then wave and say hello. -she loves to whistle. When I'm around she'll make up some random series of tones and then wait, I'll whistle the same tones back to her. If I get it right, she'll make up another series of tones. If I'm off a bit, she'll repeat it, and if I screw it up completely she'll just stomp off to the corner of her cage muttering unintelligebly and the game is over. -attatched is Saturn going after my camera... they all seem to like shiny things
kai2k1 0 #13 January 30, 2004 Good question about parrots, Do you all think that they would get along with my 2 labs? I would be afraid of the bird becoming a snack for them. There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
marcandalysse 0 #14 January 30, 2004 That's a great foto! Did you check out that video link? Yeah their ability to imitate sounds is amazing. Microwave sounds, phone ringing...one time we didn't answer the phone because we thought it was Amor faking us out, then realized it was real! Alysse asks if your's is spoiled. They say that Greys have the intelligence of a 5 year old kid, but the emotional tantrums of a 2 year old... Here's a couple of photos of Amor. It's weird to watch her eating a chicken bone, seems almost cannibalistic! Anyone else out there have an African Grey??
marcandalysse 0 #15 January 30, 2004 QuoteI would be afraid of the bird becoming a snack for them. The first time that a cat or dog gets bit on the nose by a parrot, they will learn to keep their distance! Quotethey all seem to like shiny things Don't know if I posted this one before.... A friend who had a tatoo/piercing parlor stopped by, and admiring our parrot, put Amor on his shoulder. He explained that he once had a couple parrots himself and knew all about handling them. Well, maybe not, because amor took one look at the shiny ring in his eyebrow just inches away, and took a yank on it! Almost pulled it right out of his head! marcandalysse 0 #19 January 30, 2004 oh my god, that was amazing! thanks for finding that link! I remember reading Sheldrakes web site soon after we got our grey. I am going out tomorrow to buy one of those talking toys with big buttons! although amor would probably prefer destroying it rather than playing and learning! jparr24 0 #20 January 30, 2004 i have a spoiled 3 year old CAG named Tara. She farts, whistles, imitates car alarms, etc. she currently thinks she's a chicken and clucks all the time. whenever the phone rings she yells out "phone!" then when she hears the phone being answered she says hello. she also gives kisses on demand. marcandalysse 0 #21 January 30, 2004 Alright, another Grey owner! cool! Here around Sarasota and Central Florida are many many parrot breeders. Parrots may be disappearing in their native habitat, but there are plenty hatched around here! When you look at the photos, all those greys look the same, but I am sure that the personalities would be different to certain degrees. It is amazing how they all like to imitate the phone ringing and answering 'hello', those beepbeepy car alarms, and they do like to mimic other birds... I put a bird feeder right outside the window by the cage so during the day Amor can hear her winged friends and learn to imitate them. Her Blue Jay call is raucous and so is her crow squack...She imitates the hound dog down the block... One day we came home and when she got onto my hand, gave me a hearty 'YO!'....There was some road work being done on the corner and she picked that up.... Oh yeah, Sarasota has lots of those Quaker/MonkParrots (like the ones in the Barcelona article link above) flying around in flocks. They like to squack to each other as they fly, you can hear them as they fly through the neighborhood...
JDBoston 0 #22 January 30, 2004 I swung by Skydive Monterey Bay the other day. They had a parrot named Claude. On my way out of the hangar I could have sworn I heard him send me off with a "fuck you." I stopped by manifest to confirm, and was told that this was indeed part of his vocabulary. Love those DZ parrots! Seriously, I do think they're very neat animals. Joe
champu 1 #23 January 30, 2004 I do spoil Saturn when I'm home from school. My parents play with them both (we have a double yellow head as well) all the time, but I kinda flood her with attention. Sometimes taking Saturn out is a pain for me, not because she's fiesty, but because any time I come over to her cage she runs to the door and puts her head down and says "come here! scritch!" wanting the back of her neck scratched up front. champu 1 #24 January 30, 2004 Quotewhenever the phone rings she yells out "phone!" then when she hears the phone being answered she says hello. Haha, yeah they love telephones, cause they never fail to get our attention. If Saturn hears a phone ring, she starts on her little phone ringing script. As soon as it stops ringing: " Hello? ... Oh Hi! ... yes ... that'd be great ... okay ... okay ... alright, bye "
marcandalysse 0 #25 January 30, 2004 Quoteshe runs to the door and puts her head down and says "come here! scritch!" wanting the back of her neck scratched oh yeah, they love getting that neck scratched! It's still a weird feeling scratching/petting a bird between the shoulders and neck like you would a dog or cat! Here's another one: when we are all watching tv and there's a romantic scene, she will call out "Kiss!"
