This isn't in the flight manual...

Good GRAVY! I'm guessing too many bloody mary's before taking the 'copter out is not such a grand idea. :S

Wow. That's gonna leave a mark. :S

Edit to add: When things like this happen, do the pilots lose their license? I sure hope so!
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

What an idiot! They ought to go ahead and give him a darwin award anyway.. At the rate he's going.. he will probably get one soon anyway!

That's nothing. I had a video a while back of a guy who tried to fly a Robinson R22 (small helicopter) with no, that's zero, training. His buddy videotaped the attempt. Remarkably he was actually able to keep it in the air for ten seconds or so, but then the inevitable happened. Since he survived he's not eligible for the Darwin awards.

Poor bastard that thing was probably really expensive.

He probably won't have to pay for the heli, he'll have to pay for the salvaging, the repair, and the restoration. If the water isn't too deep I reckon they can get it out OK, and I further reckon the heli isn't damaged too badly - narfed blades, sick engine, water where there shouldn't be any in the avionics, etc..

If he gets to fly again, hopefully he'll have learned that this stunt requires a much longer line. ;)

Pull.

Yep, seen that one. it's a schweizer 300. Amazing to see how fast you can get one of those spinning when you don't know what those pedals in front of you are for.

Looks like a Hughes 269 - the predecessor to the Schweizer 300 series...but basically the same thing. Those pedals are easy to figure out though.....the right one is to go faster, the left one is to go slower....right? :S Good thing there's no clutch, or else I'd never be able to fly the things.. :P

Ok Mr. Smarty Pants. Name the helicopter in the attachment. Guarantee ya don't get this one right. Yeah I know it's too small to see details. Best pic I could find.

Dave

Can't tell from that pic...it appears to be one of the 300 variants, but without seeing the engine or cockpit can't really tell. It may even be the Schweizer 333, but, again, can't tell without seeing the engine or cockpit.

Mike

Edit - actually, it can't be the 333....tail boom is different...but the cockpit looks similar to the very first 333.

I always wondered how much help playing realistic flight simulators would help in a hypothetical, there's a giant fireball approaching and the only way out is a helicopter situation.
I've never flown a helo, I've never even been in one, but what they hey, I'll have a go at itB|
(Can you imagine that waiver, never flown, here's the stick, please don't crash my bird)

I've had the chance to fly the RAH-66 Comanche simulator. Once in the full motion, domed screen sim...but with screen and motion shut off. Then again in a non-moving simulator with the night flight program loaded so my only view was the FLIR. Didn't get a chance to really try landing or taking off, but I was able to fly along and even bring it to a hover.

Course the simulators aren't completely realistic and the comanche is probably a whole lot easier to fly than any other helicopter. Doesn't want to yaw when the power changes because the fly by wire takes care of it.

I've flown a real R22 once. Very much doubt I could have survived without the instructor. :)
