Aviatrr 0 #27 December 12, 2003 QuoteI always wondered how much help playing realistic flight simulators would help in a hypothetical, there's a giant fireball approaching and the only way out is a helicopter situation. I've never flown a helo, I've never even been in one, but what they hey, I'll have a go at it (Can you imagine that waiver, never flown, here's the stick, please don't crash my bird) The only one I've seen that is anywhere near reallistic as far as aerodynamics/helicopter handling is X-Plane. The R22 is pretty realistic there....but there's only so much you can do with a computer screen as your visual references, and no feel of the aircraft. I took a friend of mine up in a 300CB once, and he had never been in a helicopter....but had lots of time on X-Plane(6.0 I think) in the R22 and B206. He was able to takeoff, hover, and land....but autorotation was a real bitch...he wasn't doing well, so I grabbed it. Overall, don't count on being able to fly a helicopter if you don't have any experience at it(the real thing), or tons of airplane experience and some helo sim time. Some people can, but it's rare. Seemed pretty realistic to me, based on very limited time in real helos.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
freeflir29 0 #30 January 30, 2004 QuoteI had a video a while back of a guy who tried to fly a Robinson R22 (small helicopter) with no, that's zero, training. And OBVIOUSLY NO clue how a helo flies. Funny stuff!!!
Guest #31 January 30, 2004 QuoteI've had the chance to fly the RAH-66 Comanche simulator. Once in the full motion, domed screen sim...but with screen and motion shut off. Then again in a non-moving simulator with the night flight program loaded so my only view was the FLIR. Didn't get a chance to really try landing or taking off, but I was able to fly along and even bring it to a hover. Course the simulators aren't completely realistic and the comanche is probably a whole lot easier to fly than any other helicopter. Doesn't want to yaw when the power changes because the fly by wire takes care of it. I've flown a real R22 once. Very much doubt I could have survived without the instructor. Dave Do you have a legit set of controls? I mean, collective, cyclic and pedals? I've been looking all over for legit helo sim controls... mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
pilotdave 0 #32 January 30, 2004 Do a search, there are companies making helicopter controls for PC sims. I'm sure you could also find instructions to build them yourself. The sims I flew had real cyclic and collective controls, but the comanche doesn't use pedals for yaw control. The cyclic twists, just like on a microsoft sidewinder joystick. It also gets a small amount of collective by lifting or lowering the cyclic. That's used for fine control when hovering. Dave
