Army Personnel and the Black Berret

Recommended Posts

In the early 70's the only people I knew of who wore berets, in the army, were S.F. and rangers. Then about the middle 70's it seemed that the army was issuing new hats to everyone. I'm still not sure what cavalry hats stand for, but they sure look out of place. I see nothing wrong with airborne people wearing a red beret, but it really bothers me when I see a new recruit wearing a beret with a flash on the front of it. It must have been in the 90's that they took the ranger's beret and gave it to everyone.

I earned a green beret back in 70 and 71. I mean it took a lot of sweat, and grit to make it through and become flash qualified. And then you see some one wearing the same thing just for signing up...There's something really wrong here!

I also know the feeling of wearing something that you don't deserve. I was in the National Guard back then. I think Guard Units now vastly improved and are taking an active combat roll, but when I returned home...ours was a real joke. I should have had sense enough to go regular Army. Most of the people in our unit were not S qualified and were a bunch of real turkeys who were avoiding the draft. And yes all of them were wearing a Green Beret if they were jump qualified. I was almost embarassed to say that I was in Special Forces because I'd also have to say I was also in the National Guard.

As far as the other branches of the services, I have loads of respect for other hard core elite units who didn't get to wear any special headgear. Seal training has got to be the toughest. But then again training is only training for the real thing. Those who have survived combat are the ones I truly look up to.....Steve1

I worked in that same MARS station sometimes as well. I was ok not doing my MOS much. When I was at 1st GRP since they didn't use us for what we where there for, we were the ones that got to fill in when one of the teams where down a commo guy. So I got to spend a lot of time with the ODA's from 2nd Batt. Those where some of the best guys I have ever had the privilage of working and playing with.

ANGLICO?

Air-Naval Gunnery LIason COmpany.

They go in all sneaky sneaky and say shoot here- shoot there - don't drop a bomb here - drop a bomb there.

Were disbanded for awhile but I heard they had just reformed a company. Any truth to that guys?

Here is my outlook....

I feel like others that the beret is a sign that you arent just an average soldier....you have achieved more. I personall hate to see soldiers walking around with a maroon beret and no airborne wings. Why should they get it just because they are in the unit....uniformity?? I was in 7th Special Forces Group for two years, granted i wasnt SF i was a part of the unit, and i didnt get a green beret for uniformity, nor did i want one because i didnt earn it. But if me being in an SF unit still wearing a maron beret, why cant the legs in an airborne unit still wear the black beret, or more preferabllity the leg cap....cause they didnt earn a beret.

I agree, i like this

I think they should give the Rangers back their black Beret and give the tan berets to the regular soldiers.

The first time I got punched in the chest (Airborne Soldiers know what that means;)) and got handed my maroon beret was the proudest moment of my life!!

Outstanding idea! I think the reason is that Shinseki was a tanker. He was a great officer but..........he was still a tanker.;) I served under him for 2 years and even briefed him on a mission once and I really liked the guy. I just don't think he understood the significance of the beret to the infantry guys.

That's what my recruiter told me I was going to be when I enlisted in the reserves. Of course, I ended up an 0844 in the FDC because fucking Sgt Lang lied to me. He actually got busted for lying to recruits...

Also, there was no ANGLICO platoon in my unit at all anyway, just a Naval Guns FO platoon full of 0861s, so I was REALLY lied to...

If you recall from Desert Storm, the Iraqis attacked a Saudi border town called Khafgi (spelling?), and there was an ANGLICO reserve unit from Long Beach trapped in there for awhile, calling in arty on the Iraqis. Least I heard they were reservists from Long Beach... someone correct me...

Is that the only one in Florida? I spent some time at JRTC in Jan 1996 with some reservist ANGLICO guys. In fact we all made a Super Poncho Hooch together while stranded in the North box for a week. I had no sleeping bag and those guys helped me gather some MRE boxes to keep me from freezing to death. It's amazing what a little cardboard will do to keep the heat in! :D Man that was one miserable week. We had fun bitching about the Army's goofed up planning. They had told me it was a 24 hour op and I would be in a warm Delta Co vehicle. That lasted about 15 minutes on LZ Crow. I spent the next week freezing my ass off. They went with the BN Scouts.....walked for 14 hours before they hit their OP. They had been out 5 days when I ran into them. I still remember the Scout Plt Leaders name though. Sgt 1st Class Hockenberry. He was the only Army guy there that didn't seem to have his head up his ass. :D Freakin conventional clowns!!! Anyway.....was that your Unit?

There were quite a few salty dogs. Our First Sgt was this bald, bulldog of a man that looked like Elmer Fudd. Had a picture on the wall that said "Don't talk to me about the old Corps un less your 782 gear looked like this." Above it was a knight's armor and sheild with a sword and lance. Too damn funny.

Well said. This idea was concocted by the same maroons that came up with don't ask, don't tell. One of whom is running for President this year,,,Oops, not quite correct he was fired by Clinton for not following the party line.

Blue skies,

I'm a leg so you can't say I'm putting anybody down. If the idea is to give everybody berets as a PR move, fine. Just don't force the Rangers to give up their color that they trained, fought and died for to the REMFs. Give the legs the tan and give the black back to the men who earned it. And yes, I do feel passionately about it. I didn't earn it, I shouldn't wear it. Period.

Blue skies and happy landings!
