kai2k1 0 #1 January 31, 2004 My wife is doing a paper on split speed limits. I would like your opinions on this to be quoted for a paper. We are probably going to send copies to The OOIDA, ATA, and Congresspersons in the respective states. Please let me know if you can help. kai2k1 0 #3 January 31, 2004 There are 10 states that have "split" speed limits. Cars can go afaster, 18 wheelers have to go slower. There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
Snowwhite 0 #4 January 31, 2004 My only comment is this. In Illinois it says 65 trucks 55. I figure if the trucks are doing 65 it MEANS that I can do 75. The cops will go after the trucks every time, since they are more revenue. redramdriver 0 #5 January 31, 2004 The issue of split speed limits isnt about the speed, it is about breaking distance. A lot of truckers, myself included, have a mindset that an established speed limit should be the same for all motor vehicles. We, truckers, feel that we should be allowed to drive as fast as all the other vehicular traffic on the road. We need to take a minute and realize that yes they are allowed to travel faster, but, they can out manueuver us in traffic, have a lot less "no zones" to cover, and they can stop in a hell of a shorter distance then we can, loaded or empty. Just my two cents worth. It makes a lot of sense when you think in terms of maneuverabilty and braking distance then in just pure speed. Blue one brotherSo, you bring your beer? Gawain 0 #6 January 31, 2004 Have your wife note that speed limits have less to do with safety then they do with revenue. Most highways are engineered to safely handle speed far greater than the posted limits. Blue one brother I agree with you on everything except that speed isn't an issue, regardless of braking distance, velocity and mass combine for force, there's a lot more force behind a big rig and therefore a lot more potential damage at the same speed.
