Can any non-drinkers let me know what they do when it is their time to buy beer?

I'm not a non-drinker, but I don't see a problem with bringing whatever beverage (or food, or whatever) you prefer when paying your beer debts. It's not the alcohol that's important... it's the talking/bullshitting/learning that happens while everyone is enjoying a post-jump day beverage that is important.

I see your from Canada. What are the regualations for jumping with Diabetes there? Any? I am technically not sopposed to jump according to FAA but I figure I know my body best and take careful control of things when I'm not feeling well.

I could see piloting a plane because of the long duration but I have never had a low last longer than a 1/2 hour.[email] Before jumping I always check the sugar levels

I rarely drink at all, and I NEVER drink beer. I have ALWAYS bought beer (whatever kind is preferred at the DZ) for my skydiving "firsts". When I began to skydive, it was in a tiny DZ that has since closed down, but the beer was bought for my sky family/instructors to help me share in my little victories. It seemed like a fun "tradition"...we also all got together to have dinner in a local restaurant on Sunday nights.

Now, I jump at Elsinore, but it is still a "family" atmoshpere. I almost never drink, but I don't feel out of place at all. :) Actually, this upcoming weekend (7-8th), I plan on drinking at "Elsinore's Instructor Burnout Boogie" and spending the night, but if I don't feel right drinking, then I won't. It's not a big deal either way. I still feel accepted. :)

Personally, I have never looked at drinking with friends as people "injesting poison". I would feel bad and have second thoughts if there was an alcoholic that I was enabling, but this has not been the case. Drinking is much better when done in moderation.

I agree with Heather, I would rather skydive more (I also have health issues) and drink less...or not at all! :)

I'm with ya SkySprite. I don't drink either. (Well, I'll have the occasional beer to quench my thirst, but I don't drink just for the sake of getting drunk).

Not to hijack, but when do you start AFF?

-Kramer

Friggin money problems. :( I've managed to talk my parents into paying for level 1 after midterm grades come out. So hopefully I'll start in mid march or so. I had finances all planned out so that I could start in January, but then the University decided to bill me all of these insurance and lab fees that they didn't mention before for a few classes I'm taking. Bleh. But cross your fingers for March for me! :)

You know, I would actually love to be there and help out where I can (and have fun!) for that. As long as I don't have insane homework next weekend, I'm thinking I might could go on Saturday and just hang out, talk, observe, wish I were up there, but just have fun. :)

The first few years of sobriety pretty much sucked.
The last 5 have been the best years by far.
Hands down the best. Not even a close contest.
I have more fun now on a bad day than I ever
did on a good day hammered.

I dont miss it B|

That is sooo cool to read! I'm glad for you.
I have a few friends who have had very nasty trials with substance abuse of various types. I've never done drugs (apart from a few sporadic whipits) and I simply could never drink enough to have a problem with it (since my stomach really detests alcohol), but I try hard to not let myself feel special, because it's one of those "there but for the grace of god go I" things. When people have been through that stuff, and come out in control and sober, I think it's awesome and beautiful. Congratulations!

Yes, maybe e-mail Westcoastchica or call/e-mail Betsy in the office or something. I'm sure that they would LOVE your help. Either way, you can always come out and hang around...maybe even do an observer ride! (FUN!!!) Maybe ask them if you can purchase the boogie tee (or basket?) and stay aroud for the raffle, etc. Also, bring a friend(s) if you can...this is for a great cause...to help raise money for the instructors' funds! You have my #, too, if you want to call me before then. :)

WOW -

I had no idea there were so many non-drinkers in skydiving?? It seems, after the sun goes down just about everyone is goin' for a cold one! Apparently not!

Don't drink either. Plus: Stomach + alcohol = "ugh" Not gettin' sick mind you, just kinda burns a hole in the stomach. Basically, am completely innocent and naive... "Right.." in Dr. Evil's voice. "...if they only knew..."

So Dawn, have you ever had to ante up a case of DP for the group?? ;) It's kind of uncommon for both wife and hub to "non-drink" - At least from what I have seen -

Definitely like the ice cream idea (or any kind of chocolate) :)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
what??? explain please...this is absolutely ridiculous>:(>:(

- have made 1,300 jumps to date, ....when I pack up to go to d.z. always bring a cooler with food and snacks (many luv me for that:P) - would never get close to aircraft without knowing blood sugars, have always carried glucose tabs in my jumpsuit pocket- make sure d.z. operators are aware I am diabetic...
also I supply glucose tabs for their first aid kit.
Always eat before I manifest....:P never had a problem.

SMiles;)

Dare I say, no? Fortunately, most of the folks we hang with aren't serious about that part... although I DID drink a beer after my first AFF.. they wouldn't let me get away without it.

It's not that we're above it, and there aren't any medical reasons... just simply for me it's a serious issue. I drink when I have no responsibilities to fulfill. I own 3 businesses, am raising a 9 year old and well, don't have much free time. Besides, if I drank... who would drive our friends home??? Hubby doesn't drink cuz he's seen so much pain from it. That said, we do enjoy the occasional safety meeting. There is one exception to this rule... at the WFFC (where you can sometimes find me with JelloShots or a Tequila Sour), when I don't have to drive, my daughter is in my sisters care and I don't have any obligations. We don't often skydive there (wierd I know) because we take care of the wind tunnel every year. But also, I can't imagine the mistakes made by hungover jumpers... that's another thread all together for sure though!!

Usually when someone says I owe beer, I say..
"I'll buy ALL THE FREE beer you can drink at the WFFC, so see you there!";)

yes I know the beer is free there;)

Be careful when signing waivers at different dz's in the states. I had to hide the fact that I was diabetic at a lot of dz's. I make sure the people I am jumping with know but I have had people look at me funny when telling them I am diabetic.

I usually just avoid the part about medication and so forth cause I am on so many meds but I don't make my condition openly known to all.

I am not sure exactly what the rule states but I have seen it on another thread. I doesn't state right out that diabetics can't jump but we fall under the "people who could loose control" catagory according so some. I might be more of a liability issue than anything.

Not to worry but don't be overly friendly about your condition.

Friggin drunk skydivers.

I don't drink. I feel so out of place.

Hey non-drinking skydivers! [echo?] Let's get together and form an alcohol-free posse!

LOL - Here is another Sober Skydiver!! I'm drinking a Vanilla Coke, it's really Good. I'm a non-drinker from a conservative non-drinking family from Utah - I'm quite happy with a Coke....B|

LMAO!!! HEATHER!!! It was the ONLY night that I drank at the Eloy Boogie...it was New Year's Eve! I had totally planned to drink that night. ;)

Ya'll sucked that night.. I had to be a good girl all night long on New Years.. but at least that nice guy brought me some champagne when I landed from the night jump.

Normally I do not drink much at all and almost NEVER to excess. But since I started skydiving again I have had a couple instances where I was a bit inebriated after the beer light is on.
For many years I only had a bit of champagne on New YEars and that was it. I never had any kind of a problem with drinking in and of itself but I have always liked to keep my wits about me. I came by that realization earlier in my life. There were a few times that I was intoxicated and things happened that I would rather forget about and keep in that distant past.

Nah, I was STILL a good girl on New Year's, too! I just get drunk pretty easily, you know, my only weighing 20 lbs. and all. I only had 2 little drinks on New Year's Eve (ask Heather...or Jake). I even watched you land your night jumps, sort-of. Well, I was pretty gone around that time.

I was probably even boring. Andrea and I left really early...around 1 or 2 am. (I have no idea, really...) I didn't even let Jake initiate me to become a Rodriguez bro. No way. (Hey, Jake claimed that I needed to be topless, and my BF is the only one who sees me topless...:P)

I think that it's awesome that you did that night jump, Jeanne! Ohhh...a nice guy brought you champagne? That sounds nice, too. ;)
