I see Daschle and Kennedy made fools of themselves yet again. Note to Daschle: excessive SPENDING causes deficits; tax cuts do not. One wonders why anyone would question eliminating ineffective of duplicative programs to save $$. Note that neither Daschle or TeddyK (D-UI) made any comment as to the effectiveness of the education programs to be eliminated. They simply attack without factual basis. Incredible that anyone gives such hogwash credibility.

I think the definition of "excessive" when it comes to spending is that it exceeds your income. Reducing income would probably be just as effective as increasing spending in making a deficit.

I know if I take a pay cut, I have to reduce my bills.

From surplus to record deficit in 3 years. Then promise to halve the deficit in only another 5. Very fiscally prudent. No wonder the conservatives love him.:P

I have one more word for you -- Pork.

I was astounded to find that the $328 billion spending bill recently passed by the House was loaded with about 7,000 "earmarks," otherwise known as "member projects," "special projects" or more plainly, "pork."

Practically all Republicans are involved. Previously, Democrats did it. But the Republicans have expanded the use of "pork" immensely.

Most "pork" projects cost thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. But if you have clout you get expensive "pork":

$44 million goes for a bridge to Treasure Island in Florida because the district's representative is C.W. "Bill" Young, the House Appropriations Chairman

$50 million in the bill is for an indoor rainforest project in Coralville, Iowa, courtesy of Rep. Charles E. Grassley

These guys are spending like drunken sailors on shore leave (no offence to drunken sailors).

A member of the party advocating socialized medicine, repealling tax cuts for those who pay the most taxes (this equates to a tax increase), and increases in education spending at the federal level is actually talking about deficit spending????

Lowering taxes makes you popular, but severely hurts public programs...

Raising taxes, or leaving them be for that matter, makes you unpopular, but effective...

And great, we bankrupted the USSR. Now:

The IMF had to bail them out, and the money is sent to Mafia run banks... 75% are corrupt

The military was downsized because, HARK! No more cold war!

People think Reagan was a great President, but the full effects of his deficit spending weren't seen for years afterward...

Anvil, do you simply memorize and regurtitate Rush Limbaugh shows or something. Since when does "bwwaaahhahahhaha" amount to a reasonable rebuttal. A budget falls into deficit when there is a shortfall or revenues relative to expenditures. As has been pointed out this can be caused by changes on either end. In the Bush administration's case, they have both reduced revenues and increased expenditures. No argument you make can deny those facts. Both houses of Congress are controlled by Republicans who have basically given the President carte blanche. So either he doesn't understand mathematics, or he doesn't care that he is saddling future generations with unbearable debt levels.

Never go to a DZ strip show.

More government programs means more money needed. Which would YOU rather have? More money for you to do what you want or more government programs to build a freaking indoor rainforest?

Raising taxes, or leaving them be for that matter, makes you unpopular, but effective...
Effective? Not really. Laffer demonstrated that increasing taxes can decrease the money the government brings in. Lowering taxes, in the right circumstances, can make one more effective and more popular.

And great, we bankrupted the USSR. Now:

The IMF had to bail them out, and the money is sent to Mafia run banks... 75% are corrupt
Boo hoo. The money isn't being used to deliberately starve millions, run a police state, or keep enough nukes pointed at America to end life as we know it. I'll take what we have now as an improvement, and work towards eliminating that problem.

The military was downsized because, HARK! No more cold war!
Yes. I see that this is a government program you don't mind cutting. Now, why dont' we go bit by bit through the budget and see what is not needed?

People think Reagan was a great President, but the full effects of his deficit spending weren't seen for years afterward..
GREAT POINT! The results of Reagan were called the 1990's, when we had the greatest surplus and economy ever. Even better than the 1980's, which were likely a result of Reagan's, Nixon's and Carter's policies. Are you willing to say that this deficit is the result of the Clinton Administration that took office 11 years ago? Are you willign to say this is not Bush's fault? Are you willing to be that consistent?

You and Kallend are quite funny today, but not as much as skydivexxl, who is jealous of my blossoming career as a lawn gnome as well as my utter lack of basketball skill. I haven't listened to Rush in quite some time, though I did read both of his books a few years ago. I'm more of a Boortz fan when it comes to talk radio, and I don't listen to him that often.

Kallend - largest deficit by magnitude. By percent GNP, I think not. Reagan still holds that I do believe, though I could be mistaken as the Republicans continue on their massive spending spree. Regardless, you do have a point. Republicans are abandoning fiscal conservatism, to their shame. Now, the democratic response: deficit deficit deficit deficit! Let's socialize medicine and increase spending! Oh - and raise taxes too! Deficit deficit deficit! Oh how ingenious. I really give those folks credibility when attacking Bush for deficit spending. Oh so much credibility. Brings a tear to my eye in fact.

Benny, you really need to get some sort of tactic other than accusing conservatives of being mere disciples of Rush Limbaugh incapable of independent thought. Though in vogue on democraticunderground.com and other leftie websites, it just doesn't hold water with those of us who know it's bullshit and merely laugh at you when you make such ridiculous comments. You claim federal revenues went down. Really? Oh really? LMFAO. Do some research, young padawan. Questions you might want to ask yourself whilst conducting your research include:

1) Have federal revenues historically increased or decreased after tax cuts?
2) How have federal deficits looked during recessions in times past? Federal revenues?
3) How does proposing massive federal spending programs help end deficit spending?

once you get past those three, the following question will help put things in perspective for you

4) How 'bout that market last year?

That should get you started, should you actually choose to find the answers and think about them for a bit.

In spite of your attacks against me, I am going to continue in my quest to both play in the NBA while simultaneously continuing my promising career as a part time lawn gnome. Short power!

Whew. Now that I've gotten that off of my chest...

Dude - lowering taxes does make you popular. It also helps the economy when done correctly (first round of GWB's tax cuts; I do NOT support the second). What federal programs AREN'T public?

Reagan's foreign policy was right on the money 90% of the time. Who gives a rat's ass how corrupt some banks are today with regards to RR - he had nothing to do with the corruption you're referring to.

Bipolar environment was far more stable than the current one in many regards, though I still hold that many of the foreign policy turds we're encountering today are a direct result of the foreign policy we were pursuing while still in the bipolar environment. Hindsight is bliss.
