Vallerina 2 #1 February 2, 2004 I'm not really sure why, but I hear so many people say, "America is the greatest country in the world." I have not been to every country in the world, so I cannot say that. For those that say/think that, have you ever actually gone to another country and experienced other cultures? It's not bad if you haven't, but what is your justification for saying that? Is it because you love the way our government is set up better than anyone else's? Do you think it's the best because of the football here? My brother says that statement all the time, and he hasn't been outside of the US much except for Canada, Mexico and Venezuela. He tells me that he'll wait to travel overseas since there that he wants to see here first. That's a big reason for his love of the country....there is so much here. I'm just different. I just can't say what the best is until I've experienced it all! I also don't think there is a "best," maybe "best for me," but I think everything is just different. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

CanuckInUSA 0 #3 February 2, 2004 Americans have much to be proud of, but this country is far from perfect (I doubt there is a perfect country out there). Part of what makes America great is it's free enterprise and part of what makes America bad is it's free enterprise (with the attitude by many that the almight dollar is to be worshiped). Recently a friend of mine (who happens to have a duel UK/US passport) told me that she prefers the European attitudes over the American as the Europeans are much less likely to walk over the next guy in order to get ahead. But from my experiences in my short 40 years of life, America is the land of opportunity. It's just too bad that so many people think that opportunity and money are the same thing. Also, America is likely NOT a good place to be if you are poor (but I wouldn't know what really being poor means ... at least not yet). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Nightingale 0 #5 February 2, 2004 I would say that geographically, the US is one of the most diverse... we have mountains and deserts, two oceans, and a wide range of climates from the sticky south to the dry death valley area. I LOVE travelling the US. Is it the best country in the world? I don't think there is a best country. Each country has its strong points and its weaknesses. There is no best, only difference, and difference is what makes life interesting. After all, what would be the point of travel if your destination was the same as your point of origin? weegegirl 2 #7 February 2, 2004 If I were to say that America is the greatest country in the world... I would be speaking from a very biased opinion. I've been to many countries - throughout Europe and South America. I am most comfortable in America, but that is because I am an American. I love England like a second home and there are others that are top notch as well. I think it all depends on whether or not your social and political views are in the majority. Hmm. Interesting topic.
kai2k1 0 #8 February 2, 2004 What makes it the best is that you are only limited by the limits you put on yourself. You can do anything (within reason), be anything, and go wherever you want. The opportunities are endless. Even our impoverished citizens have running water, hot water, a microwave, heat and air conditioning. Most homes have at least one television. I have been to countries that these "comforts" are a luxury usually reserved for the elite of their societies. In closing we in america have it good compared to other places in the world. Are we the greatest? NO, there is tons of room for improvement. But we have to opportunity to make it that way. CrazyIvan 0 #9 February 2, 2004 What makes a country GREAT? its PEOPLE. I haven't really traveled all over the world, but I have to say that the good 'ol USA always come to the top. It's not a perfect country, it has many defects and its share of wrongs, but the virtues and rights are always overshadowing the bad things. This country is really the land of opportunities IF YOU WORK HARD and HONESTLY, I guess people who come here expecting that dollars come down from the sky without them lifting a finger are the ones who complaint and hate this country, but like I mentioned above, if you work hard, you'll get what you want and achieve your goals, unlike other countries, in which you can work hard all your life and get nothing. This is just an example of what I think of this GREAT nation.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. Even aside from the refrigerator box people, there is a lot of housing in this country that is borderline third world and lacks hot water, heat, air conditioning, and a microwave (?!?!). You may be right that everyone has running water, but I doubt even that. They are called slums for a reason, not just that the wallpaper is dirty. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
