Meaningless Thread Titles

so you're insisting people compensate for your limited attention span?

if you don't like the thread titles, don't read em. your choice.

Now that's not fair. You're clearly putting words in his mouth. He did not use the word "insist," he used the word "urge," which is like "entreat." YOU are the one saying, now, that he's INSISTING.

We KNOW it's "his choice." When I read his post, I understood that he's simply making a very good suggestion that would enhance communication on the forum. Better labeling of threads means less time spent on those you don't care to read, and also fewer MISSES of threads you WOULD have read, if only they had been labeled well enough for you to know you're interested.

I see no problem with John's suggestions.
But please. It is disingenuous to characterize him as "insisting people compensate for [his] limited attention span."

Time for some summary introspection from the poll results!

- I skip over threads with meaningless titles, without looking. 33%
- I look at threads with meaningless titles, but am often annoyed. 23%
- Meaningless thread titles don't bother me. 44%

One-third of the respondents indicate that they don't even bother to look at such threads.

Another quarter of all readers will look at them, but are often annoyed at the content they discover within.

This seems to indicate a very strong sentiment against the practice!

So, for those of you who post meaningless thread titles, be aware that one-third of the people here won't bother to read your message. And some portion of another one-fourth of people that do read your message, will be annoyed that you didn't bother to state a clear title detailing the subject matter.

how about stupid thread titles, you got a total of 63 votes on this poll, thats jack squat. How many people saw the title of this tread and thought "boring" . Stating 1/3 really isn't a true statistic. For the amout of users here you may as well have got 3 people to vote then stated that 1/3 of dropzone users skip over them . See my point?

I honestly would much rather read any meaningless titled thread over the endless sea of self righteous pro/con gun debates or conservative/liberal political debates.

To each his own.

I'm just advocating that such things be clearly labeled so that we can pick and choose according to our personal preferences.

Would you be annoyed if you entered a thread titled "What do you think about..." only to find out that it is another thread about guns or politics?

I stated that is was one-third of "respondents". That was an accurate statement. I did not claim that it was one-third of all people in DZ.com. See my point?

And while many people may not have bothered to particiapte in the poll, you haven't provided anything to show that those who did, are not a representative sample of the whole population here.

I think the poll results are an indication that a significant portion of the people here don't care for meaningless thread titles. The numbers may not be exactly accurate when extrapolated to everyone, but nevertheless, they seem to show a strong sentiment on the subject.

You are welcome to draw your own conclusions.
