Kramer 0 #1 February 5, 2004 There is no motive behind this poll other than simple curiosity and boredom. Let's say that I told you right now, a year from now, you will have completely stopped skydiving. What do you think the most likely reason for this would be? -Kramer The FAKE KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!!

downwardspiral 0 #4 February 5, 2004 i say other because there are two reason for me and only one is listed. Death or a number of doctors recommended that I not jump anymore for whatever health reason.www.FourWheelerHB.com
wmw999 2,560 #5 February 5, 2004 I haven't answered, because I can't really know. Several of the options are possible, others aren't. I quit (effectively) for about 15 years, so I can easily imagine things taking me away from it. But I never sold my gear. For utter permanence, death, jump-ending injury would do it. I know that marrying a jumper does not mean that they'll never ask you to quit. But I also know that other things can become more important. Most of the others can change with years. Mellowing, divorce, rethinking -- all those can change the decision. I'll bet you didn't want all this philosophizing, did you Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
AggieDave 6 #6 February 5, 2004 Lets see...I've seen death. I've seen friends very hurt and dead, so that wouldn't be it. My fiance is a jumper as well, so that wouldn't be it... I think I'd pretty much have to die to never jump again.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

kansasskydiver 0 #9 February 5, 2004 I can't answer because I still jump. 99 percent of the people on dz.com still jump. Maybe rephrase it to "What would it take to make you stop jumping" I've lost a friend, seen a friend almost die, money issues, personal issues, so's request, skydiving got boring once, i had my first cutaway, just never had a serious injury. I think we have all gone thru these stages honestly. Has everyone else too?<--- See look, pink dolphins DO exist!
aero04 0 #10 February 6, 2004 Since I can't see this or any other poll for some reason, I have no idea what the options are. Possible reasons for me is I'll graduate in May and I'll go where the work is, so if there isn't a DZ within reasonable driving distance, I'd hang it up and pick up a pilots license, if there is an airport nearby. If I was injured bad enough to change my life (broken back, neck etc.) I'd do one more jump if possible then probably call it quits. I hope I don't have to make this decision however. I'm sure there are more reasons, but those come to mind now.
jumpergirl 0 #11 February 6, 2004 I am temporarily grounded right now... I had a car accident in August of last year and have a herniated disk in my neck. The doctors are talking about neck surgery. Right now it's 50/50... half of my doctors say I'll jump again, half say no way. I'm not listaning to the last half. Actually, if they say it's an absolute NOT then I probably won't. usedtajump 1 #12 February 6, 2004 Baring death or permanant injury, I couldn't imagine anything that would have made me quit skydiving after I started and it was full bore for 15 years. In the last 5 years of the 20 that I skydived the whole concept just started getting stale and I lost interest. However, I just got invited on an old fart load for later this spring and am gonna do it. Who knows???The older I get the less I care who I piss off. dgskydive 0 #14 February 6, 2004 Quote a number of doctors recommended that I not jump anymore for whatever health reason. My only probelm with doctors is that they are quick to say nomore jumping. The biggest influence on me in this sport has been Dan B.C. the more I learn about the guy the more I respect him. After the plane crash they told him he should never jump again. God am I gald he didn't listen to him. Think of how different our sport would be without him. I don't always believe doctors. After all the are just practicing right?Dom
Dumpster 0 #15 February 6, 2004 Quote Maybe rephrase it to "What would it take to make you stop jumping" Death. That's about all I can think of. Or a really really bad injury.
velo90 0 #16 February 6, 2004 Voted other. Death could be one reason, but physical injury is a more likely prospect.
peacefuljeffrey 0 #17 February 6, 2004 I guess I feel that there are technical problems with the question. I mean, you offer as "choices" what would make one stop jumping, but if one had a bad enough injury, couldn't it very well preclude jumping? I answered that I'll never stop jumping: but that's just the me NOW answering. The me I might be in fifteen or thirty years will be quite different from the me now (if the last 32 years are any indication). And surely I think that if I were in excruciating constant daily pain from some nasty injury, that'd be the end of my "I'll jump til the day I die" claim, wouldn't it? Anyway, I guess the question really goes to, "Just how much do you love jumping, and how hard would it be to get you to stop it?" Perhaps you should have polled: Which of these things would you allow to stop you from jumping for good?" I don't know if serious injury belongs on that list, because it depends on whether the injury makes it impossible to safely conduct a skydive. I'm sure there are amputee skydivers with prostheses (and I was shocked to learn that there's at least one BLIND skydiver!), but put somebody on a ventilator and it's no longer a choice of whether he'll "let" that keep him from jumping. I know people who gave up their motorcycle passion because of concern for being there for their kids. These same people could end up dead from a chunk of blue ice falling from an airliner. I say live your life in the way that makes you happy, and gives you the best thrills. If an S.O. tried to stop me from skydiving, I'd say that S.O. does not wish me to be happy, she wishes me to be HERS. I would question the love of someone who would seek to deny me my pleasure, for their own selfish desire to make a futile attempt at removing all risk and danger from my life. Stopping skydiving would not do that, anyway. ---Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" grega 0 #18 February 6, 2004 If someone offered me to go explore universe with some super advanced starship for the rest of my life. Then i might stop skydiving on earth, but i'd probably still find a way to jump occasionally on different planets "George just lucky i guess!"
peacefuljeffrey 0 #19 February 6, 2004 I haven't been skydiving very long, so that goes a long way to explaining why I have not witnessed a serious injury or fatality, nor lost any friends who skydive. It's a blessing. I don't know how I'll react if I ever see someone burn in. But I do believe it will not make me stop skydiving, just the same way numerous local airplane pilot fatalities have not put fear in me about continuing to fly as a private pilot. (I'm more scared of getting on board the planes of a corner-cutting airline and flying with a pilot I don't know from Adam.) Apparently there are many DZ.commers who have lost people close to them in skydiving accidents. I believe I bear the sorrow of that just the same as all of us do -- and the best I can do to honor the lost is to make sure I don't take skydiving for granted. ---Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind...
