Nightingale 0 #6 February 6, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/02/06/dominican.two.heads.ap/index.html edited: I found the story. Its a case of "parasitic twin" syndrome, or craniopagus parasiticus. another article: MIAMI (Reuters) - An international team of doctors hopes to operate in the Dominican Republic next month to remove an undeveloped second head from a baby girl born with one of the world's rarest birth defects, caused when a conjoined twin fails to develop in the womb. The baby, Rebeca Martinez, was born in mid-December at a hospital in Santo Domingo with the head of an undeveloped twin attached to the top of her skull, facing upward. ... Her condition, craniopagus parasiticus, is so rare that there have only been eight documented cases in the world, and no known cases where surgery has been attempted to correct it, Hazim said in a telephone interview. ... Rarer "parasitic" twins occur when one conjoined twin stops developing in the womb, leaving a smaller, incompletely formed twin that is dependent on the other. They can form as an extra limb, torso or head, or as a complete second body, lacking vital organs. In Rebecca's case, there is a gap in her skull where the heads are joined, and the blood vessels are intertwined, Hazim said. The vestigial head is enlarged and fringed with dark hair like Rebecca's but has a poorly developed brain and only rudimentary facial features, he said. here's some pictures of other parasitic and conjoined twins. SFW but maybe a little disturbing, so I'm not going to make it clicky. http://freespace.virgin.net/rachael.chrisp/freaks/conjoined2.html

Nightingale 0 #10 February 6, 2004 They are removing it. The two heads share an artery, which is worrying doctors, but since the girl's own head isn't developing like it should because the parasitic head is causing problems, they have to remove it. champu 1 #15 February 6, 2004 I think it's kinda cool that something like this can happen, and yet there are doctors that, with a lot of talent and a little luck, can give this girl a chance. Dagny 0 #21 February 7, 2004 You know....interesting that you posted the pic of the little girl. I've been following this story with a great deal of interest. Did you know that there have only been 8 documented cases of craniopagus parasiticus? No one has ever attempted surgery to correct the condition either. True to its name, craniopagus parasticus means that there is a fusion of skulls between twins, one otherwise normal and one undeveloped. The undeveloped twin becomes parasitic in that it adversely affects the host, in this case, the normal twin. The second head on baby Rebeca has rudimentary features, an imperfectly developed brain, and blood vessels. Rebeca has grown from 7 pounds to 10 pounds since her birth, but the second head is putting pressure on her brain and is taking valuable nutrients from her. Surgery is still being considered for her, but it is believed to be very necessary for her continued growth and survival. Doctors from UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital have traveled to Santo Domingo to examine her and determine the best course of action. If surgery does occur, it will require two teams of nine volunteer doctors working in 12 hours shifts to remove the parasitic fusion. The surgery was planned for early Feb. I've been busy so I have missed some of the latests news on it. It's very, very interesting to me and I am hopeful that success will be met by the physicians and for the baby and her family.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali

Dagny 0 #25 February 8, 2004 I was sent a link about the surgery. She died. Bled to death and suffered multiple heart attacks. I'm so sorry to read of her death. I was very hopeful the surgeons would be successful. It would have been an amazing thing if she would have survived. It's such a difficult position to be in. The surgery was necessary, but such an incredible risk. Unfortunately, taking risks means taking chances and sometimes chance doesn't favor the risk taker. Such a disappointing ending.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
