They floated to earth 15 minutes later at Thailand's Royal Field, or Sanam Luang, near the Grand Palace. One report says a sudden wind blew some of the skydivers off course and at least three were injured. But the injuries were not life-threatening. The old mass skydiving record - involving 572 parachutists - was set five years ago, also in Thailand. The world-record skydive was staged to mark the 72nd birthday of Thailand's Queen Sirikit. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
quade 4 #2 January 24, 2004 http://nationmultimedia.com/page.news.php3?clid=4&id=107058&usrsess=1 Quote Multinational skydiver team sets record for Queen's birthday Published on Jan 25, 2004 A total of 672 skydivers from 42 countries leapt from six aircraft over Bangkok as part of the Navy's activities to mark the Queen's 6th cycle birthday, and set a new world record for a mass free fall. The previous record of 588 for a mass jump was set in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, in 2000. The number of parachutists - 672 - was chosen to represent the Queens' birthday cycle. An unpredictable wind blew several skydivers off the landing zone at landed in Sanam Luang. At least three of the jumpers were injured; one with a suspected broken leg. The group, collectively known as "World Team", leapt out of six C-130 military transport planes at 2,135 metres. The parachutists carried with them a giant Thai national flag as big as half of a football field to unfurl in the sky. Some of the jumpers encountered problems as they neared the ground, with several landing on trees at the edge of the field, and at least one hitting the roof of a nearby university building. The skydivers included 272 parachutists from the Thai armed forces. Members were described as among the world's skydiving elite. "Everyone's celebrating. There was a lot of tension in getting everyone down at the same time," said team spokeswoman Karina Willerup. Judges from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale officially verified the record, she said. From Tuesday, 372 members of the team will also attempt to break the world record for the largest free-fall formation in the northeastern city of Korat. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

mccordia 74 #11 January 25, 2004 The Dutch news had a small blurb on the record. It wasn't too positive though. They basicly portraid the skydivers as a bunch of f*ckups, landing in trees, in the water and on roofs, and twisting ankles and breaking legs. They showed a few exits (looked pretty sweet) and a few nasty landings (all by people dressed in the same blue/yellow team-overals) hitting the ground pretty hard, getting cought in a tree and loaded into an ambulance...JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? foxyroxtail 0 #15 January 25, 2004 It took ten minutes to get 100 jumpers down from 13000 in Kitty Hawk, with staggered deployments as low as 2500 and as high as 10 or 11k - any of you Doggies out there who can give us your alti? You were the upper end and last to land. 15 minutes is probably correct. ________________________________________

slug 1 #18 January 26, 2004 QuoteFrom what I've head from two very experienced jumpers that were on the event, the winds had picked up. On the news saw a very short video of someone landing at the event. Just prior to landing the jumper was coming straight down, landed, did a immediate 180, and hauled in a brake line while moveing feet quickly. Don't know the size of the canopy but it wasn't a Foil. IMO winds were "brisk" R.I.P.
