Need help with video camera please!

Recommended Posts

I'm making a small film for a project, and kinda need a video camera. I'm on a really tight budget, so need help and tips (please!) on getting the best bang I can for my buck. Second hand / ebay etc are no problem, I don't mind using those kind of resources.

I've got my eye on a Canon MV1 (currently list price £115.00), is this camera any good? Has anyone used one?

Ideally I'd like to get a Mini-DV camera to make editing easier and quality best, but it's no big issue as one of our guys can convert pretty much any format to digital anyway. I'd like it to give as clear (think TV-like?) picture as possible! ;)

Alternatively has anyone got an old camera that just about fits these criteria they would want to sell me? I can cough up about £150 or £160 ($280/$300) at most, though obviously the less the better! :P

Thanks in advance! :)

First...move this to photography and video forum. Second....never used a Canon camera but I'm sure anything in mini DV format will work.....just be advised that if it isn't broadcast quality it won't be as pretty. The only cameras I have experience with is my old Panasonic which you saw bite the dust in that video and my new PC 105. The Panasonic was a good camera. Even after I smashed it....it still works fine you just can't put a WA lens on it since the entire front plastic casing is gone. It worked well the entire time I owned it. Unfortunately.....it's a bit out of your price range at around $550 now.

Unfortunately, it'd cost me 3-4 times the price of that cannon camera to get a higher quality panavision/equivalent for just one day. And i'd get to keep the cheapie [:/] Perhaps I'm going blind, but cheapest I can see on there is £735 a day for a lightweight camera. True, it'd be superb cinema quality imaging, but a bit out of my grasp for what is essentially a home project :|

Thanks for the feedback though. :)

I'm sure there's a lot of people at your dz with fancy cameras. Tried to borrow one from one of them?
Maybe someone even will help you with filming and editing?

Might cost you a couple of jump tickets and a little beer. ;)

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

is it for a student film?

a lot of places have discounts for students.

Just call them, tell them you're looking to rent a high quality mini-dv personal video camera (not pro quality) and ask if they do that, or if they can refer you somewhere.

I'm spoiled living here in LA, I guess... I want a camera, I can get my paws on whatever I want for a low price. Just show the student ID and tell em what I want.

Kinda student films.. lots of students involved, but not an actual project through the course. Hence why I couldnt get my hands on their top of the range pro DV kit :(

I've yet to actually find somewhere local that'll rent minidv cams - can you believe it! Sucks living in the middle of nowhere (practically) - cornwall - :S

As to lots of people at my DZ having fancy cameras.. I don't have a DZ now, it's closed down :(:(:(
