Winter rigging project.

Recommended Posts

I have AT least the whole winter for this rigging project. A PD Storm 190 with 5 jumps on it...
Got chopped and landed in a river.

After a quick initial inspection, over 30 holes between top and bottom skin, smallest is pencil-hole sized, biggest is open-hand sized. Plus there is some pretty heavy work on some crossports.

I am aware that in time and material, a new canopy would be cheaper, but I need to keep my sewing skills up to date :)Don't know how long it will take, but according to my "free time", it will be LONG.

I still want to give this canopy a 6th jump. She deserves it. She is too young to be deconstructed for parts.

Attached is a bad representation of the holes (also i accidentally inverted top skin and bottom skin on the lower drawings)

It seems that you have to open some loaded ribs:S.
Trust me,will be fun closing them;) And remember, when you really want to kill the sewing machine, don't. It was your fault becoming a rigger:P

Good luck and have fun

it's the first time I feel I could be sewing and smoking a cigarette at the same time with no added risk for the canopy [:/]

dang that's gonna be a lot of work. Lots of experience for me :)
Now will I use the Rags method or the HELLRAISER method ? :D:D

Quite the project.

One area of questions though -- what's the source of the holes? CRW burns, mechanical abrasion from churning around on a river bank, UV damage? The rest of the canopy is passing pull tests?

I wouldn't want to do all that work just to find that all the other fabric is starting to fall apart.

Excellent project. I just hope there is not too many holes near a stitch. What kind of damage do you have on cross ports ?
I too have a winter project. I have 7 AAD cutters (obsolete) waiting to be tested to cut different type of cord, cable, line... Good luck;)

Learn from others mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all.

Sounds like a lot of work with no guarantee of a serviceable canopy, but, If I were wanting to work on major repair skills this would definitely qualify. I'd go for it. I'd only suggest one thing. When and if you do put a jump on it. Jump it in a Tersh rig. You just can't know how its going to fly.

a couple of crossports have small damage, 1 is badly damaged.
This will be my Patch-Like-A-Pro training.
plus there are so many holes in there, I might share the work with other local riggers who need/want some training, and with the owner too who has impressive sewing skills (mostly on his BASE gear)

I knew you looked way too happy sitting behind that sewing machine at Sandy's place. :)
