Is Texas the Best State?

Recommended Posts

you should come out to skydive houston, if the weather's decent there's usually a group of us that'll make a bonfire and just hang out and shoot the shit. good times. there's not really any big assholes at SDH, there's a few loud ones but nothing bad. We could always use more cool people! :)

Texas sucks ass!!!

Actually I can't really say that. All the Texans I know are friendly as all get out and I hear there are some beautiful areas there. I have only spent time on the ground at NAS Dallas and Fort Bliss, so my view is limited.

However, politically/socially I think they can be loonies in many ways:

-Also their propensity for executing mentally retarded people is disturbing, even to a pro capital punishment person such as myself.

Otherwise, I hear Austin is the schizz-net.

Now what does Texas have that Colorado doesn't have?

Beaches.

Mild winters.

Worst music in America

Really? What music would you be referring to? I'm sure the hosts of the South by Southwest Music Festival (one of the largest multi-genre music festivals in the world) would be surprised to hear this, as would the producers of Austin City Limits. If you're talking about country music (Sure, everybody knows that's all Texans listen to, right?) maybe you should come to Texas and actually check out a few radio stations or, better yet, visit one of the many live music venues in Austin (the "live music capital of the world") before making a rush to judgment.

Overly proud people

Yeah, everybody from outside of Texas hates that. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with having pride in your own state, so long as you don't disparage anybody else's state. Unfortunately, people from all over the country, including Texas, have a nasty habit of treating states like high schools and "knocking" every state but their own.

Massive amounts of tractors

How many tractors have you seen first hand in Texas? What part of Texas were you in? I seriously doubt that Texas has as many tractors per acre as many other states, such as Kansas. A good portion of Texas is either desert or hill country. So, we have a few agricultural regions--Sue us. If you dislike it so much, stop wearing cotton.

Oh, and I also love the Big Bend area. (Terlingua is fun.

Yes, Big Bend National Park is one of the neatest places in Texas. Attached is a photo of just one of the many deep canyons there.

The 2nd photo attached is a warning sign on one of the many hiking trails there.

Terlingua, for the benefit of other readers, means "three languages" in Spanish, because during the late 1800's, three cultures all co-existed there at the same time; Spanish, Indian and American.

I grew up in texas , lived in beaumont for ohh about 12 years. Which for those who don't know is a total shit hole nothing but oil refineries and other heavy industry plus its hotter than hell during the summer. I've lived in fort lauderdale florida for almost 2 years and it kicks the shit out of southeast texas butt to be fair if I moved to somewhere like jacksonville I wouldnt have such a great opinion of florida. I do miss the politeness of the people but thats about it.

Some photos of another neat feature of Texas: Indian caves and paintings.

Photo #1 shows a cave along the Pecos River, about a mile upstream from where it enters the Rio Grande, at the border with Mexico. This is called the "White Shaman" cave, named after a figure painted on the wall on the inside.

Photo #2 is an artist's rendition of the cave paintings on the inside. The actual paintings are now faded due to erosion and weathering, and goats which rub their horns on the rock near the bottom.

Thanks for the pictures. That is a really neat area out there. Rafting on the Rio Grande is nice, and riding donkeys into Mexico. Oh, and as for the mountain lions... I once attended this "big cat" seminar in Big Bend, where we spent the day hiking, looking for mountain lion tracks, breaking up pieces of "scat" to see what the lions had been eating, and spotting the little mounds of dirt that the lions urinated on to either mark their territory or to engage in courtship. It was pretty cool, except that we didn't actually see any lions (but maybe that's a good thing). :)

I'm sitting in Texas at the moment. Beaumont, to be exact.

Texas is a big state.

If your going to be there all weekend and like the bar scene go check out downtown (crocketstreet). Lone star bar is pretty laid back, cheap drinks etc. If you get a girl named stephanie for a waitress give her a shitty tip:) The upstairs at the irish bar next door has its moments as well.

Not even close bub! Really I don't know I have never been there. Not really sure if I wanna.

I thought the same thing when my company told me they needed me to move to TX. I was pissed because I thought TX was going to be nothing but cowboys, dualies, country music and desert.

Now I wish I could move back I loved it so much.

But if it's true, is it bragging?

We don't flaunt it unless you are here. Just because we have a bigger homefield advantage, don't get all pissy.:P:P:P

Likewise, although my open criticism of Dubya would probably get me lynched, I'm still proud to be an 'Honourary Texan'. Too many good people there to let one fool spoil things.

The only shitty thing about Texas is how long it takes to get all the way across the state

and the radio reception between El Paso and Dallas...

and the fact that every beach in the state has brown water and tarballs.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

I have to call BULLSHIT on this statement. Granted the coast from Lousiana down to about Corpus Christi isn't the best beaches to be on. There is a large formation just a couple of miles off the coast that traps water and makes it all apear to be brown and nasty. As for the tarballs, haven't have those in many many years.. In Galveston anyways.

Now you want some pretty blue water and crystal sands. Move south of Corpus Christi, check out South Padre Island area.. I can see you making a blanket comment like this if you've only visited Galveston beaches. But there is almost 800 miles of beaches in Texas....:ph34r:

Stayed in Corpus Christi twice. Both motels had tarball cleaning stations set up outside their entrances. One was the Embassy Suites. Not sure on the other. Also flew over the South Padre Island. It may be nice to some, but IMHO does not compare with any beach between Gulf Shores and Appalachicola, FL. It was very similar to beaches from the GA border to St Augustine. I am not impressed by any beach you can drive on. Sorry.

None of them compare to the east coast of Florida. :P

You got me :P I have to admit Texas doesn't have the best beaches. I was just trying to say, you can't judge the whole cost of Texas by what you saw in one little area..

As far as flying over??!? :| Your going to base your judgment on a flight over the area.. whatever... South Padre is beautiful

Don't forget the lack of gas stations between San Antonio and El Paso. You basically have to stop at every gas station to avoid being stranded in the middle of the desert.
