Equal Rights in the Army?

Recommended Posts

Just talked to a woman that is looking to go to college....

Figured this little tidbit would go along well with another military thread that is out there.

After High School she took the ASVAB and scored nearly a perfect score on it, and she was an honor student with AP classes as well. The Army recruiter said "That's nice - too bad you will never get higher than a secretary because you are a girl." Then told her not to bother to enlist since she would never see combat and could never make a career out of the army.

I've seen her transcripts - she didn't fib there. The rest I have to take her word on, or just consider it a lie. Don't know her well enough yet to make that judgement.

This would have been about six years ago.

With a high ASVAB score and any eager recruiter, she could have found a myriad of MOS's to fulfill. She could have worked on her degree at her permanent party station, then shifted to being an officer, she could have a path to Warrant Officer, etc.

I "think" she just decided the military wasn't for her - which is what she could have said rather than come up with it being the military's fault.

if she is that smart is there a way she can go to college, get uncle sam to pay for her school like im doing and get a degree plus a spot as an officer in the army? there are tons of spots for female offciers. most that i have known in the past are in flight school now flying blackhawks...thats better then flying a desk!

I don't doubt that it happened. There are some pretty pig-headed recruiters out there. I know a gal who had a Marine recuiter offer her sex for a better MOS. Another guy at MEPS offered his services to young women who were shipping out to basic training. There are a lot of schleps out there who should be canned. Unfortunately, they sometimes end up in positions that offer them control over other people's careers.

No different than the civilian sector, really...

Blue skies and happy landings!

Unlikely. I've met a lot of high ranking female officers, such as:

Rear Adm. Ann Rondeau, who is the commanding admiral over all US navy training programs.

and

Capt Kathryn Hobbs, C/O Great Lakes Naval Base.

At our ROTC unit we've also had female MOIs (Marine Officer Intructors) - captains in the US Marines on their way to being majors.
...

I know a Native American guy who liked the military because, in his mind, everyone was considered equal. His comment was that everyone was one color..."green".

But then I got to thinking about my time in the military. There is a definite caste system there. If you have less rank than someone else you are considered a peon by many of those who have more rank.

If you are an NCO you are second rate to an officer. If you are an enlisted man you are looked down upon by both. There are even places you can't go unless you have the rank to be there. Equal rights in the Army? In many ways I think not.

I think one of the funnest times that I had in the army, was one day when we were asked to go wash the colonel's car at a local car wash. On the side of the car was the Colonel's insignia. So naturally one of us played driver while the other two sat in the back, and pretended to be officers. It was great fun watching everyone on the street, snap to attention and salute us as we drove slowly by. Of course, we had disgusted arrogant looks on our faces as we saluted back. There's more than one way to break the boredom of a crappy detail....Steve1

She was misinformed if that is what she was told. With high scores there are numerous job opportunities for female. There are a lot of exciting jobs and other then the direct combat MOS the limit is what she puts on her self. Recruiters will try at time to get you to sign you up for what you don't want, just be persistent, after all when you sign your in till your obligation is over. Remember the recruiter is working for the Army and they are trying to fill the slots needed. As far as the comment about never being more than a secretary, that is BS and he should of never made that statement.

Of course there is a definite difference between rank. But everyone has the chance to work hard and reach that rank. If you think about there isn't a job out there that you don't have a boss. I myself am self employed but have my customers, which I must please to stay in business. So in a way they are my boss.

I'd tell her to go to another recruiter. Many are not that knowledgeable.

Have her talk to some one who has already taken the career path she wants and how they did it.

When I went to the recruiter I had a lot more info then he did and I pretty much had to lead him through the process of getting me from High School to Flight School.

my .02 worth here...
My 1ST year as an ARMY Recruiter, I was the top Recruiter for High School Females in my Company. At the end of that 1st year, I was also the Recruiter who had the most HSF DEP losses in the Company. Gotta make em stick! Anyways...if she scored as well as is indicated, she would have been wearing a pair of boots. My primary concern was making QUOTA, yeah there is one folks sorry. Whatever MOS that she selected with the Career Counselor at MEPS that's what she got. If we could entertain the idea that we were selling jobs and not the Army then sometimes, very few and far between, then we would. Sounds to me tho with the comment that she wouldn't end up being more then a secratery she was either misled, or would want US to believe that she was. Its not in the best interest of ANY recruiter to turn down someone who is qualified by making remarks such as those that were suspossedly made. But, not knowing the person, or the full facts about it, it becomes very difficult to make an educated quess why something like that would have been said. Perfect example. I had a kid who scored 1 point away from max....problem was trying to get a Felony Waiver for Robbery....pretty difficult!...Smark guy..but pretty dumb too...Blues

The Army would love to have someone like that serving. After getttign money for college and graduating she could even go to OCS.

AS for woman not seeign combat, I personally know 2 female MP's in MP units over there that were in battle.

I would encourage her to enlist if that is what she wants to do, don;t go back to that recruiter though

By the time you read this you have already read it.

If she was infact a GFA, meaning a HS Grad, Female, and scored 50 or better on the ASVAB (A), then she could pretty much write her own ticket in terms of MOS selection... she needs to talk to a different recuriter, better yet the Station Commander.

She may not make it a career, but you said she wanted to go to school, so thats not really the issue, and the Army has the best programs (read most money) for that.

She should try filling out an ROTC application for any of the services. All of them in fact, beause she can apply for all three simultaneously.

Recruiters don't get points for ROTC applications every month - that would be an annual thing.

PM me if you need any info on that. Be travelling for a bit so give me time to respond if you do.
