dropdeded 0 #10 February 14, 2004 The first link on that page is the instructions....read them, it won't hurt....much ----------------------------------------------------------- Well, it did hurt, just a little. I dont understand half the language involved in computers. I believe I followed (problem 1) the instructions right. Still comes up "USB Device Not Recognized". I think I will just wait til moday and have the roomy do it. Save you all from trying to explain this stuff to me, I really am clueless. PhillyKev 0 #11 February 14, 2004 Hmmm....you ever hook up any other USB devices? If no, it might not be enabled in the BIOS, you'll definitely need help with that if that's the case. Not that it's hard, but don't think I could explain it to you the right way, and you could really screw stuff up messing around in there.

Muenkel 0 #13 February 14, 2004 Hey Ed, I'm in the same boat as you right now. Completely computer illiterate and have reading comprehension problems. Just the other day, I tried to hook up a scanner to my Dell. Same problems as you. I called Dell support and they told me the scanner was not compatable to my system. End result, I ordered a Dell A 960 printer/scanner/fax/copier combo for only $161. Not a bad deal. Good luck, Chris _________________________________________ Chris
PhillyKev 0 #14 February 14, 2004 Quote called Dell support and they told me the scanner was not compatable to my system. Yeah....ummm...{picks nose}....uhhh, it's not compatible. That's a crock...hope it didn't cost you any money.
Muenkel 0 #15 February 14, 2004 They told me the scanner I had was not compatible to windows xp. Was I ripped off? The only money I spent was the $161 for the new system, which like I said is a printer/scanner/fax/copier combo. I felt it was worth the money. BTW, the original scanner was on loan to me temporarily, so I would have had to buy one anyway. PhillyKev 0 #16 February 14, 2004 Unless it was specifically designed for a MAC, which I don't think they even are, then yeah, that was a load of crap. Well, maybe it if was really really old and the manufacturer didn't write any drivers for XP, but even Windows 2000 drivers should work on XP. What brand and model scanner was it? If you really want to know if they lied to you, I could find out pretty easily.
AndyMan 7 #17 February 14, 2004 Quote They told me the scanner I had was not compatible to windows xp. It's EXTREEMELY rare to find a piece of hardware, especially from the major manufacturers that is not compatible with XP. Did you go to the manufacturers website and search for an updated driver? That will solve 99% of "incompatible" problems. Also, if I'm going to call someone, I'll call the printer help line LONG before I'll call the Dell line. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. CrazyIvan 0 #18 February 14, 2004 Things to consider: 1- If your computer have USB connectors in the back of the case and on the front, make sure THEY WORK, some systems are kinda funky, if that's the case, plug it in the back and see if it works, if not, do it on the front and repeat the process. 2- If the system is AWARE/DETECTS of the USB scanner but CAN'T install it, it means that you haven't installed the PROPER drivers. (remove all the scanner software and make sure the folder usually under C:\ or PROGRAM FILES is also gone, and reboot) 3- Check the BIOS and MAKE SURE (if there's an option) to answer YES to PLUG AND PLAY OS 4- Check DEVICE MANAGER and see if there's a conflict/problem with that device (if you see a exclamation mark or a red X or if you have a UNKNOWN DEVICE) 5- Since is XP the OS you're running, I'd start the system in SAFE MODE (hitting F5 as the systems boots up) and check DEVICE MANAGER AGAIN and see if there's conflicts of DUPLICATES (say 2 USB scanners etc, if that's the case REMOVE THEM ALL)__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. Muenkel 0 #20 February 14, 2004 Thanks Kev for offering your help. I appreciate it. The bottom line is the scanner doesn't even belong to me. I borrowed it temporarily. I'm pleased...so far...with the purchase I made because it was an excellent price and is capable of so many functions. Thanks again, Chris _________________________________________ Chris

Snowwhite 0 #22 February 15, 2004 We have a HP8485, and operate on windows 98. There was a scanner that came with this computer, and it worked fine for maybe 50 scans. Then the computer and the scanner quit talking to each other. My son in law brought over his scanner, we down loaded the program, it worked fine for maybe another 50 scans, and quite talking too. Went to my mother in laws house to use her HP system. It worked fine for a few scans and THEY quit talking to each other. Don't know if it's me, or that HP computers don't like the scanners they come with. Either way FRUSTRATING AS ALL GET OUT. Half way thru scanning a 6 page document for work, NOTHING!
