DYEVOUT 0 #1 February 15, 2004 I saw this vehicle sitting in the corner of a cornfield. It appears to be a "retired" military piece of some sort. It has a short wheelbase, 4WD, all independent heavy coil spring suspension and incredible ground clearance - that has been somewhat compromised by the owner's addition of snowplow bracket work. The images suck, because I had to step on them so hard to make them small enough to post, but I have high res. versions - that I will be glad to e-mail to any interested folks that may know what this cool critter is. ----------------=8^)---------------------- "I think that was the wrong tennis court." kmcguffee 0 #3 February 15, 2004 It's the new HMMWV MG. Great for tactical operations in Urban European terrain where parking is at a premium. "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do." Ben Franklin
cocheese 0 #4 February 15, 2004 Looks like something a ski area would use for a utility truck. I wouldn't want to be in that chunk of .... unless it was a parade, or on a golf course. Two places you won't find me.
CrazyIvan 0 #5 February 15, 2004 I guess is a Volksgrocerburger or VK-22 a fast all-terrain vehicle to transport groceries to the battlefield__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.

twnsnd 1 #7 February 15, 2004 I agree, it looks like something I've seen on the flight line in Europe. -We are the Swoophaters. We have travelled back in time to hate on your swoops.-
LouDiamond 1 #8 February 15, 2004 I can tell you this, it's nothing that was ever in the US Military. Someone elses military, maybe. I seem to remember seeing something like that at the ski resort I worked at as a kid. My guess is that it's not a military vehicle at all but a heavy duty utility vehicle."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
SlyFox 0 #9 February 15, 2004 I wonder, could it be the Army mule that some one made a cab for it. Where is the engine located on it? *****Why would anyone jump from a perfectly good airplane? Because it isn't much fun if it's broke.****
LouDiamond 1 #10 February 15, 2004 QuoteI wonder, could it be the Army mule If it is they did some serious chopping of the bed length and relocated the axle."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

Amazon 7 #12 February 15, 2004 I think it might be a variant of the UniMOG There are two of them running around this area and their owners show up out at the Off Road area just east of here. Theirs I believe are surplus German or Swiss Army. http://rhein-zeitung.de/old/97/08/06/topnews/funmog.html
DYEVOUT 0 #13 February 15, 2004 I believe the engine is located amidships, as the thing has a "doghouse" between the seats. I believe the "mule" had little or no suspension (this guy has MONSTER coil springs) and a rear mounted, horizontally opposed, air-cooled 4 banger. I couldn't crawl under it at the time, to ascertain it's driveline layout, engine cooling method etc... but I did notice the differentials are tucked up very tight to the vehicle's underside, and there are no visible driveshafts from them to the wheel hubs. Almost like the critter has gear boxes behind the wheels - like the pre '67 Volkswagen vans, and Things had at the rear wheels. ----------------=8^)---------------------- "I think that was the wrong tennis court." DYEVOUT 0 #14 February 15, 2004 I was thinking the same thing, either a Unimog, or Pinzgauer variant. The "hood" length is too long for a Pinzgauer, and there is no evidence of the thing being made by Mercedes Benz, as the Mogs were. There is no visible badging on it anywhere. ----------------=8^)---------------------- "I think that was the wrong tennis court."

riggerrob 643 #17 February 16, 2004 Reminds me of the "mules" used to tow aircraft around airports. However, it it was a mule, someone removed the heavy cast iron bumpers.
