kallend 2,117 #26 February 17, 2004 If you're smart and being rich is important to you, you will get there even if you start out poor. Your goals in life may not include being rich, however. You may wish to be a professional skydiver, for example. Generally, smart people are more likely to accomplish their goals, whatever they may be.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
PhillyKev 0 #27 February 17, 2004 QuoteI was just pointing out that given our priorities it's a lot easier to get rich if you are born with ludicrously good looks or a high percentage of fast twitch muscles than it is being born with a high functioning brain. I don't buy that. There are plenty of skilled athletes and attractive people who don't make it big. I'd be willing to bet a higher percentage of intelligent hard working people are rich than those relying on looks or athletic ability. Sounds to me that you're just jealous
Vallerina 2 #28 February 17, 2004 QuoteSo, who is the smart one? The guy studying for 8 years to make less money, or the guy throwing the ball through the hoop for millions? When the athlete gets injured, has nothing to fall back on, and eventually becomes poor, they definitely take themselves out of being considered "the smart one."There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
benny 0 #29 February 17, 2004 How many 18 yr olds, 20 yr olds 25 yr olds, do you know of, that have millions of dollars, that they weren't given by their parents? How many of these that are left got the money as a product of their intelligence. Yeah, there were a few during the dotcom boom, but in general it takes years, decades even to move up in just about anything. You could be the best financial analyst ever, you're still gonna start out working as an assistant to some dude who's been there 10 years. Never go to a DZ strip show. It's easier to get rich young with looks and/or athletic talent. It's not difficult to get rich over a period of years if you're smart. I think anyone, smart or dumb, beautiful or ugly, athletic or klutz, can make a pile of money if they want it bad enough.

Still, though, rich or poor is not a lifetime measure. I may someday, make shitloads of money (probably not since I want to be a professional skydiver) but currently, I'm poor. How intelligent does one need to feel smart? Having some money to play with is nice, but when push comes to shove, I just want to be happy. billvon 3,089 #43 February 17, 2004 >but it would be nice to be a 21 year old multi-millionaire. No it wouldn't. No one should have that much money before age 25-30; that much money messes you up. I've seen it happen to a few friends of mine. Most of them are now poor.
LuvToFly 0 #44 February 17, 2004 All depends on what is meant by "smart." Some of the smartest people, and some of the most intelligent, did not have much in terms of $$. But many are like that due to certain paths they chose in life, being intelligent enough to have figured out what would make them happy without havin' to get there (rich) and come up empty - So the irony is that they don't see themselves as poor at all. Suicide exists among the rich and famous and adored as well - so it does not imply a fulfilling life, apparently. I agree with the poster who said it is more about happiness. And to know what will make you happy, or bring fulfillment, you are better off smart. Vallerina 2 #45 February 17, 2004 I thought about this on my way to work one morning when the djs were making fun of Jessica Simpson, and they played a few of her dumb quotes. I won't lie. It's annoying listening to someone my age who is not considered to be very intelligent but has more money than I would know what to do with. Although, billvon makes a good point. Many dumb, rich kids do not invest their money wisely, and they waste it all away. In the end I'll be glad that I'm not dumb but not rich at the age of 24. I don't have to worry about losing money because I got fat, old, broke a leg, worn out etc. I wouldn't want to have those kinds of worries deciding my income. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

FallingILweenie 0 #47 February 17, 2004 It depends what you consider dumb, and what you consider rich or poor. I didn't do well as an engineer in college so some of my profs or classmates might think i'm dumb. some of the clients i work with are really dumb--well, ignorant is a better word, and i wouldnt want to be rich with that lack of intelligence. if by smart it means smart enough to get out of the situation with my brains alone, then i'd rather be smart and poor.
