craichead 0 #1 February 16, 2004 So, I told AndyMan not to get me anything for Valentine's Day, but he never expressly said that I shouldn't get him anything! As a surprise, I got him an 8x10 print of the attached photo. The caption reads: Clem Sohn, who jumped from 10,000 feet in his "trick suit" at Curtiss Wright Airport. He is standing with his helper Harold Neuman. April, 1935. Photographer - Quinn I work for the Chicago Historical Society, which has an incredible collection of all kinds of historical photos, all available for reproduction. I just happened to find this one a week before Valentine's Day! _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

freeflir29 0 #3 February 16, 2004 That's why I chuckled pretty good while watching the Adrenaline Rush Imax movie. They made some comment that the guy in the film "Invented" the wing suit. I thought...."Funny....he doesn't look that old."
PrairieDoug 0 #4 February 16, 2004 This photo reminds me of "The Gypsy Moths" movie, although it took place much later. Part of the story line involves a special "cape" jump designed to thrill audiences at barnstorming shows. The "cape" was really a primitive wing suit. It was said to be especially dangerous because flyers would get so entranced by flying the cape that they would lose altitude awareness (no Dytters then). craichead 0 #10 February 16, 2004 Cool! In the meantime, it can also be found on the British Pathe film archive, but for a price. There is a free preview, but I wasn't able to get it to work. http://www.britishpathe.com/product_display.php?searchfilm=franz+reichelt _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

craichead 0 #13 February 16, 2004 QuoteDIdn't I read that ALl but one of those origional 50-something birdmen died?? Yup... Unfortunately, between 1930 and 1961, 72 of the 75 original Birdmen died while trying to break the barriers of the human flight. Markj 0 #15 February 17, 2004 Hey Dave any time frames on when the site will be back up? I have completely exhausted my skydiving clip collection and am dying for some new ones. Luckily video clips don't wear out like tapes cause if they did mine would be toast by now!! thanks Bye
