The good and bad on sony tech support

Recommended Posts

Spent a while on the phone and on the net with Sony after my laptop backlight went out. I didn't have the original packaging materials, so they said that shipping it back would be an issue. Didn't have some form they wanted that came with the machine that would 'allow' a warranty repair. No option on the website to get an RMA, and they wouldn't give me one over the phone.

So I sent Amy over to a Sony service center. She explained the problem and showed them a web copy of the receipt. "No problem," the woman said. They fixed it and fedexed it back to me; it got delivered the next day. No problems, no charge.

So the hot ticket is apparently to just walk in with the thing.

It's a PCG-V505DXP. 1.4GHz, 512mb RAM, 60gb hard drive, CD/RW, DVD-ROM, built in 802.11b. Something like 9 hours run time with the extended battery (which I got.) I got this one mainly because it's pretty small (4 lbs, 8x12 inches) but seems to do everything I want.

I worked for Sony once...that's why I don't buy Sony products. :)

Really? Cause we have had nothing but great service through Sony. My husband broke the lense on his video camera climbing out of the plane once, and he called them, let them know EXACTLY what happened and they originally said, sorry its not under warranty, but right before the delivered the fixed camera, they called us and said its covered.

We have all sony products in our house. If they made toliet paper, my husband would buy it.

Perhaps something has changed, or you were lucky that you got thru a 'good' tech support center. Those are good news.

I also had no issues w/ them. I too broke the lens on my camera (when I chowed in) just days after I recieved it. Made a phone call or two, sent it back and voila! new camera. B|

I have a dvd/home theater system I've been trying to get fixed for a year...well, actually I gave up. In the middle of every DVD, it will suddenly turn on subtitles. You can turn them right back off but it's annoying. Found a message board with tons of people complaining about the same thing for that model and some of them saying that after dozens of calls they finally would get someone to admit there was a firmware upgrade to fix it, but it's not publicized and hardly anyone at Sony knows about it. Even after calling them myself a dozen times, and telling them this information, still can't find anyone who knows about it and will give me a repair authorization, even though I've talked to guys who work at the repair location and they know about it.

So I sent Amy over to a Sony service center.

Is there a reason that Amy went and not you? Where you out of town? Do you think having a woman take and item back will get better service?

Sorry, you know me, full of questions.

Cause I had to work that day and Amy didn't. I send her to do all sorts of things nowadays - welding, returns, getting cars fixed etc.

I figured it was because Bill knew that Amy could get more from the customer service since she's a sweetie, and we all know how "mean" Bill is.

I have a bunch of machines, but my Sony laptop is the best of my three laptops. A very nice machine. But service with Sony is not as good as other companies - that's for sure! Thanks for the tip on the service center, but there are only four in the US and the nearest one to me in is Illinois :S See, you complain about California, but it does have some advantages.

I'd just give them the "Bill face" and they'd be so cowed they would do whatever I wanted them to! Although I have noted that this does not work on you. I'll have to work on that.

That's cause I think you're cute ;)
