Jimbo 0 #3 February 21, 2004 What's the big deal? That's hardly worthy of the label of Big Brother. They're trying to deal with an emergecy situation, non-essential persons on the streets are hindering their efforts. You wouldn't complain if the police or fire department cleared the area while dealing with a shootout, or a large fire, would you? I just don't see the problem. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
Michele 1 #4 February 21, 2004 Twould seem with 95 centimeters of snow hanging around, being inside between 11 pm and 7 am seems realistic, and fairly prudent. And if it's for only one night, to get streets cleared, I don't really see much of an issue.... Of course, we're expecting about 1 inch of rain in the next day or so, which gives you an idea of what I actually know about 95 centimeters of snow.... Michele 1 #6 February 21, 2004 QuoteIn SoCal? Holy shit!!! Get ready for 8000 car pile ups. Eggggggggzakllllllllllly. Which is why I think we should have a curfew, too, so only lawbreakers will get into the pileup. I will be snug and comfy in sweats at home, eating my absolutely delightful - and much in demand - split pea soup. The bread to go with it is rising as we speak. It's raining! The only thing I worry about besides violent, wicked car accidents is Penguin, a stray kitty who lives in my alley. She should be inside with me in a warm snuggly place, not scrounging for food in the rain. Sigh. I'm betting there aren't too many stray cats in Nova Scotia. newsstand 0 #7 February 21, 2004 Sorry but even in my most liberal moments I can't see this as "big brother." "Truth is tough. Gawain 0 #8 February 21, 2004 QuoteYeah...the do that around here when we get hit with big snow storms. It's happened before here. Every time a "State of Emergency" is declared. The blizzard of 77 and I think again in 83 in parts of New England. After hurricanes, the fires in SoCal. Once an emergency is declared and FEMA takes over, they make the rules. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! PhillyKev 0 #11 February 21, 2004 Yeah, I know, but there are lots of people that think FEMA is the secret shadow gov't and only exist for their ultimate goal of a police state and nationwide eminent domain. I've had quite a few conversations with James Lee Witt, the former director, and as liberal and afraid of secret gov't conspiracies as I am, I can honestly say, that isn't the case. Unless of course he was just some puppet plant by the REAL secret shadow gov't.

Does he fly a black, soundless helicopter between hops in regional, US concentration camps whilst stringing barbed wire and just crying because Y2K didn't happen??? If you answered yes, you've been talking to the secret shadow gubmint. And if you think Bush is bad, just wait 'til they come into power.... That's one of the theories. That FEMA's charter statest that in times of multi-national emergencies they declare martial law and then submit to UN authority. Not true at all, but gets a lot of people's panties all in a wad.

DeNReN 0 #19 February 21, 2004 While I do understand the need to keep cars and people of the streets during a cleanup like this....I have a serious problem when I am threatened with a $1000 fine and taking my car. Halifax amalgated with all of the surrounding cities and comunities several years ago and covers a very large area....I live over 30km from the actual city(in the boonies so to speak) all the main roads have been cleared(still working on the side streets) but this cerfew still applies to me....and others that live over a hour away from the actual city. Maybe Big Brother isnt the term I should have used but the local government has screwed up....they did not consider all the factors....what about poor fred who works the backshift at the tiddle winks factory...he's been in bed asleep all evening(they only anounced this cerfew this evening)...on his way to work he's pulled over fined $1000 and has his car impounded.. The cerfew is total BS....the morons at city hall have screwed up.
nathaniel 0 #20 February 21, 2004 IIRC New York City imposed a curfew in '96 or so after a few feet of snow. They were pretty delicate about the public announcements, but IIRC there were repercussions to be felt if you couldn't provide a good excuse to the authorities. It wasn't a big deal really. Maybe because I was still in school at the time, and it was the first snow day in NYC in like 20 years it sweetened the deal.My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
Jimbo 0 #21 February 21, 2004 Quotebut the local government has screwed up....they did not consider all the factors.... You're right. They probably didn't consider needing clear roads to get police, EMS, and fire crews, where they're needed. You need to think about the bigger picture here. Quotewhat about poor fred who works the backshift at the tiddle winks factory... Most likely, the factory is closed today. I don't think that Fred has to worry. QuoteThe cerfew is total BS....the morons at city hall have screwed up. I don't think that they did. Government in any form is hardly infallable, but in this case I think that they made the right decision. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
