Putting a check down while customer is still eating

Recommended Posts

I agree. A tip is "Hey great service. Thanks for being so attentive. Here's something extra to show my gratitude (hence gratuity)."

Poor service does not deserve a tip. If you are a server and you know you need your tips to live then you better earn it.

I have been known to actually leave this for a tip. "Here's a tip - Server who gives poor service, goes home with empty pockets." But you have to be REALLY bad to get that.

My rule of thumb is 10% for okay service, 15% for good service, 20% for great service, and whatever I can comeup with for Superior service.

I took my wife to a place where our meal cost 75 bucks for just us and the server was so damn good I was speechless. I tipped the exact amount of the bill.

The server never would have gotten that if the gratuity had already been included on the check.

I really don't give a damn either way! drop it when the meal is delivered, during the middle of the meal, or at the end as I am finishing, big deal. Don't mean nothing to me. I'm going to sit there and eat at my own leasure, and leave when I want to regardless of when the check is placed on the table. If I am purposly ignored by a waiter/watress for 20 minutes, as was the case with the Irish Pub, that individual will get no tip. Additionally, I will be speaking to the manager of the establishment, asking him/her if it is their policy for their waiters/watresses to purposly ignore customers? There is no call for a situation like that to occur!

i waited tables at 2 restaurants. cheddars, which is comparable to chilis or applebees, and rockbottom brewery which is considered to be 'finer dining' or whatever. at cheddars during a lunch shift we dropped the check on the table with the food.and if not then, when you do the first check back. and i LOVED it that way. i never got a complaint from a table, as everyone was in a hurry to get back to work. at dinner, no. you drop the check after taking plates and offering dessert....

at rockbottom if we didnt do the latter EVER, be it lunch, dinner, whatever...it was an automatic write up. our mgrs considered it SO rude to drop a check with food on the table. and the funny thing is, the customers seemed to always ask for their checks the minute i brought their food out at lunch time. of course you'll always have those few people who do it differently, and you can never please everyone, but in my experience it seems that during lunch, they want their food and their check as quickly as possible so they can get back to work!
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

Guess you don't want me to order dessert or coffee or anything else.

Exactly. I have lost count the amount of times I didn't order dessert, even though I would have liked some, since I was feeling 'hurried'. I do also base my tip percentage on this, combined with attitude, demeanor, and overall service, and I normally do tip very well. The worst service I ever got still got 10%. I have many times gone over 50% for excellent service.

Thank you everybody for voting and your responses. :)
Anyway, I hope you all had a great day jumping today, those that could anyway. It was too windy here so I didn't get to jump, but tomorrow (Sunday) is looking much better. So, also have a fun and safe day jumping tomorrow.
