Burning Man!

Recommended Posts

I may be mistaken, but I think I once read a story or heard from someone about a jump into Burnign Man. Does anyone know anything about this? I am planning a trip to my first Burning Man fest within the next couple years and can think of no grander enterance.

One of the guys organizing the trip to BM is Bryan Burke, who I believe is the S&TA at Skydive Lake Tahoe right now. I had some correspondence with him earlier in the year about it.
The basics are: D license minimum, and more importantly the organizers are trying to limit it to people they know personally and have seen land. BM is way out in the middle of nowhere, and it would really rain on everyone's parade if someone hooked in and had to be med-evac'ed.
Equally important, they want to bring people who are going to be a part of the whole BM spirit and perform/do something unique, not just people who think it would be cool to jump out over the festival and swoop in to crowds of adoring, naked, drugged-out hippies... Wait, maybe I was imagining that last part myself...
Hope that helps. I hear it's a cool time even if you stay on the ground.

The S&TA and DZ manager for SLT was Ken Jobsky. I say was because I recieved an e-mail from Ken several weeks ago stating that the DZO's Charles Bryan (an original "freefly clown") and Mike Vail ("chronicles" videos) had chosen to shut down the DZ permanently during the usual winter closure.
Ken informed me that another DZ may open at the same site (Beckwourth, CA) as a Tandem mill. Read that "no students or experienced jumpers"!! No word if they will use the Skydive Lake Tahoe name. But be advised: The King Air is gone, and so are the fun jumps at what was formerly one of the higer DZ's in the country. As for the burning man trip...that was an annual event of the old SLT and was made using the King Air.

i have been trying to get out to the burning man for YEARS! it is by far the craziest festival i have ever heard of........a week in the desert of anything goes and it is ANYTHING goes! it all revolves around the burning of a gaint man like figure on the last night. all kinds of crazy costumes, gaint figures of every kind and loads of naked people everywhere. thousands of people desend on the "playa" for the week. though i have not been to WFFC or Burning Man, i have known people from both and Burning Man wins by far. look it up! as for skydiving out there, it is way in the middle of no where and every year dust stroms are pretty bad. and too, believe it or not, skydiving into the festival would probably not impress that group of people! it is crazy!

Yeah I figured it was not an easy adventure, something left to thoes who know what they are dooing and have been around for quite some time. Just curious!

Waka Waka!!!
Yeah burning man definitely looks like something else. It could be a great experience, not only in a crazy festive way (Don’t get me wrong, bring the festivities on), but a new communal interaction kind of way. One full week in the desert, everything you need you bring, no vendors (beer trucks), little electricity, and when it is all over burning man just disappears without a trace, a huge collective cleanup leaving the desert looking exactally like it was before the event.

The 'SkyPeople' are currently organizing the BurningMan trip this year. There are many ways of getting involved. The beautiful Ava Hristova put together a website: http://www.aerialsoul.com/BurningSky/ to organize all of the skydivers/others interested in going to BM this year. You can find contacts from that site. Aligned with the website is a yahoo group: BurningSky (you can join it from the above website).
Check it out! There are a few cool pics from last year AND our plans, for this year.
I know that BurningMan is not until the end of August, but there are things that people are doing now, to prepare. We are encouraging people to get involved as soon as they can.

I'll clarify some info on our plans for Burning Man 2002. The SkyPeople are certainly going back this year and our plans are bigger and our group is growing. Our site is called BurningSky (www.aerialsoul.com/burningsky) -- it has pics and details of our camp plans - both theme camp and aerial art. New info is added often.
The requirements for jumping are a C license (and you should feel comfortable landing at altitude - 4000 ft.) We have secured the plane -- Charles Bryan's King Air and are now accepting payments for Shares of the Plane. A Share equals 6 "rides" in the plane -- for a skydive or an observation ride.
If you are interested in going to BurningMan and joining the BurningSky camp:
1 - read all the info on www.burningman.com about the festival. this is not your average festival.
2 - Check out www.aerialsoul.com/burningsky for Camp Plans.
3 - Read the recent newsletter on the BurningSky site to find out where to mail in your money.
4 - Buy your BM ticket (tickets.burningman.com) -- they are currently $185 now.
6 - Sign up for the BurningSky email list -- go to www.yahoogroups.com and search for BurningSky. You can read past emails to see some history of our plans.
let me know if you have any questions.
burn on,
shane

Not to insult those who enjoy this event, but it doesn't sound like fun. Based on the description it sounds like a cloudy day at the DZ that lasts a month. And it appears you have to crap in a bucket the whole time and take it with you when you leave. *shiver*
Again, not to be insulting, but what's the attraction?

Uh, that's the point. People that "don't get the attraction" blow it off and stay away. People that "get it" will absolutely not mind the spartan conditions just to be around a huge group of like-minded individuals. Personally, as a "like minded individual" I would give almost anything to be there. I have been yearning to get out there for several years now.

You're not the only one Chuck. After reading over the website I'm wishing I had the cash and could take the time off work this year. Some friends of mine already invited me, but I've already got too much time off planned this year.
Hmmm... maybe we should start planning for next year now...

Ditto. I've been meaning to go for years but so far it hasn't gotten to the top of my list of vacation priorities... maybe next year?
I think we'll need a dropzone habitat.

I'd love to go to this. I used to follow the Dead and have been to a couple of Rainbow Gatherings. This looks to be right up the same kind of alley. Hmmm, I've been trying to decide what to do for my vacation, maybe this'll be it.

...it looks like a freak fest and I can think of a 1000 other ways I would rather spend my vacation.

I wouldn't mind it being a freak-fest at all. God bless the freaks! I'm just curious as to why it is such a major attraction for this crowd. I don't doubt that it is and for good reason. I just don't know the reasons! From the website it appears that you can expect as much social control as you would at any other location, at any other time of the year. I guess my question is "What do you get from Burning Man that you don't get from a weekend at the DZ?" I'm not saying there isn't a difference and that even if there is a difference it isn't worth it. I would just like to get more info.

Actually I don't mind the freaks. After all, I grew up in New York.:D I love to people watch. I recently went to New Orleans and there you can get all the freaks you want, but then you can retire to your 4 star hotel and not shit in a hole.:)"JANE, HOW DO YOU STOP THIS CRAZY THING?"
