WrongWay 0 #27 February 23, 2004 QuoteShe was complaining about my remarks in the "cold sore" thread. I feel that they were justified, and I will make them to her (or anyone else's) faces. Besides, I never get crass and threaten people, but I do call "Bullshit" on this issue. Ah, this I was not aware of. Thanks MM. This is another thing that comes with being on the net. If you can't take it, don't dish it. I haven't seen either of those threads, but with all due respect, IF it's true you're making false remarks about people, don't expect others to be kind to you. Personally I hate it when people start new threads to point fingers at others. For instance, there was a thread started not too long ago by someone who had a problem with jealousy of other jumpers and their occupational priveleges. Clearly it was a follow up on some remarks from a different thread, and was aimed at the poster of that one. If you're going to start a big issue (long thread) because you're pissed that someone made a harsh remark to or about you, then perhaps you should learn to PM and not seek the attention of the rest of the world. All you're going to get in this situation is a world of shit from other posters, and I'll tell ya now, though I don't like being unkind, I'll be one of them. Steel 0 #31 February 23, 2004 QuoteA few years ago, dropzone.com was a beautiful oasis on the internet. However, if you ever study human behaviour you'll find out that there is a certain percentage of total a-holes that permeate the planet (let's call it 1 in 1000). So, if you have a community of 500, you only have a 50/50 chance of there being 1, but if you have a community of say, 26,000, then you probably have at least 26 total asshats you have to keep in check. We've a victim of our own success. Quade I got to correct you on that one only because its fun to do so. Assuming your first number is correct that 1 out of every 1000 is and a-hole, then in a community of 500 the chance of there being 1 a-hole is 39.3622%. The calculation in 26,000 is hard to get a percentage for because it requires far more digits than my TI-85 has. Its somewhere along the line of {(0.999)^(25,974) * [(.001)^26]}/{1}, which I believe ends up equalling something like 5.17596322068 E -90.If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass. I am willing to bet that these people who are mean wouldn't have the guts to be that way in person. I'm a mean motherf**ker in real life too. I have no problem telling anyone how I really feel. Close, but you read the instructions wrong - 1 in 500 is 30.35%. (1 or more is 39.36%) For a community of 26,000: there is most likely 25 or 26 people (odd for each 7.8% individually) With a 50% chance of there being more than 25 (50% chance there being less than 26) there is more than a one percent chance for there being between 16 and 36 assholes (individual stats for each number) there is 90% chance of there being some number of assholes between 18 and 32 or a 90% chance of there being at least 20 or more assholes but only one asshole out of 26,000 when normal odds are 1 in a 1000? you are right, it's practically zero but I'm pretty sure there's only one really bored asshole with minitab on his computer....... ... On the first part I should have given a little more throught because that was obviously. On the second where you gave ranges, such as probability between 16 and 36 or 18 and 32 or any specific range for that matter, I am assuming you used a integral with limits to figure out. I vaguely remember that formula but not enough to use it at this point. The last time I saw it was about 8 or 9 years ago. Are you and actuary or a University math professor? Or do you just happen to remember that formula? I wish I could remember all that stuff but when you don't use it you start to forget. I even find myself having to look up the formula everytime I need to figure out an interest charge that was assessed compounding continously. If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass. rehmwa 2 #44 February 23, 2004 Hey Steel - I was just mocking you for mocking quade. I have the most boring job in the world. I use stats all the time and teach it at work when the official instructors need help. (it's engineering and sometimes we do use data to make decisions - my job is to make sure people don't misuse data to make the decisions they want to make instead of what they really are supposed to make). This is a great example for the next class when we go through basic stats background. (Unless there's some PC wierdo in the class that doesn't like the term 'asshole'). The type of stat you're working with uses the "binomial distribution". That's the one most skydiver stats question gets driven to. I use the software package Minitab. It's very powerful as long as you understand what's behind the theory. I got caught up in a stats discussion on another thread and got pretty tired of it, some I'm off this subject now. If you want any info on the softward, PM me and I'll help. ...
