clint 1 #1 February 22, 2004 I am having trouble getting my business on most search engines. Google is great when I type in my business name. But if I type in Utah skydiving my website does not show up at all. If I go to Yahoo search, and type in my business name, it's not there at all. How do I fix this problem? Thanks, I want to be there at least. It doesn't have to be the first one that pops up but that would be nice too. Any suggestions? Thanks, Clint
CrazyIvan 0 #2 February 22, 2004 What you should do is to include META TAGS in your HTML, in other words KEYWORDS so search engines can pick them up, is a lot of work let me tell you. I have a business doing that and my brother is the one in charge of web design and search engine advertising/rating, and it takes a little while to achieve those results.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. Gawain 0 #3 February 22, 2004 Using Yahoo! as an example and being a directory service just dropped using Google as its search engine so they could incorporate more pay-type directory services. So, just like any directory service, you can pay to have increased visibility or keyword association in addition to regular methods that Ivan noted. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! PhillyKev 0 #4 February 22, 2004 Every search engine is different. Some use meta tags, others don't. You have to research each one and find out specifically how they index. A million books and online research on the subject. One thing that won't work is paying for one of those automated listing services. They just submit your site but don't look out how to get the highest ranking. Google, for instance, ranks you based on how many other sites are linked TO you. There are some human services out there that will manually register you for a fee, but they're quite expensive. The one and only commercial site I ever made, it took me twice as long to get it registered and to come up high in the listings as it did to design the site in the first place. Bodyflight.Net 0 #11 February 23, 2004 Search Engine Marketing (my specialty since 1998) all but a couple of my clients get first page placement for their particular clients. As you know I offer a service that provides detailed how to's setup for your website and market, but for everyone else's sake I'll give you the general how to. First thing to know, it's not easy. It will take quite a bit of effort on your part, which is why I'm in business, most business owners don't have the time to bother. Now. If you want GOOD QUALITY search engine traffic, there are many techniques, but mine are all based on the "honesty is the best policy" First thing, Know Your Market Utilize Search Term Suggestion Tools or WorldTracker to find out what keywords your audience is using to search for your business and similar businesses. Find a way to incorporate these ranked wordes within your alternate image tags, meta tags and body of your page. Meta Tags are varied and you can find a variety of formats everywhere. It's best to announce yourself completely to the spiders and a good meta tag tells them when to return, what type of content inside, and also provides them with accurate keyword filled page titles and content descriptions that pertain to your target audience. I do Search Engine Submissions in two categories Free Submit & Paid Inclusion Engines. The free submit engines like google & dmoz, etc... require time & patience for placement, having a good reputation with submissions also helps when placing a site (something I've gained in the last 5 years) You must accurately describe your business, and adhere to EACH of their terms of service & policies.. this is where major reading will come into play for you since you don't already know. IF your website is up to snuff and they don't have much info on your topic, you will be included more quickly. You will also be included more quickly if you are HOSTED on a server that is spidered more often. For instance, googlebot visits my server daily, and does a main database refresh monthly. This means, sites on my service with quality content who meet the criteria are included rapidly into the index. If you are on a service that is not visited often you will have to wait the standard 6-8 weeks for a visit from the spider. If you watch your server logs you will see when it visits. The paid inclusion engines (altavista, inktomi(feeds to yahoo) ask.com, lycos, msn.com etc... are also easy to do but you must again, abide by each one's rules & regulations to qualify, and then sign up as a member open your account and submit your information. The cost of the whole shebang is about $150 when you total each engine annually (I usually charge an extra bit for the time it takes to setup my clients and submit their info which is a couple of hours) The whole SKILL to the thing is to KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE, and also to think a little bit bigger. There are ways to get on engines good sides, and ways to get on their bad side. For instance, if you reside on the same server (with shared hosting this happens often)as a banned IP address, meaning someone else on the same computer as you has been bad and google doesn't go there anymore, that means bad news for you. This is something you look at after you've done what you can, and it's still not working. There are countless other ways to drive traffic to your site, and improve search engine ranking or inclusion, some low cost some not. I couldn't even begin to go into everything here but so everyone knows I DO NOT RECOMMEND, paying Yahoo for their annual paid inclusion as their are much cheaper ways to get in their results without costing you 300 bucks for the year. Well, maybe I've shed some light on the process... locate all the search engines, do your homework, follow all the rules, and stay on top of it. Don't do anything wrong and you should be ok. The Search engines have transitioned so much over the last few years, with so many scammers out there trying to cheat, they have had to be hard on many and curt to few but when you choose to do things honestly you cannot go wrong. I live online all day long, this is all I do, I've handled over 300 successfull accounts in the last 5 years, so I believe I know what I'm talkin about! If I don't hear from you again, good luck with the new season!

vid666 0 #13 February 23, 2004 If you are willing to pay for Perclick advertising, you can use google adwords. - adwords.google.com though since you are not selling anything online, it probably wouldn't be as desirable...
Bodyflight.Net 0 #14 February 23, 2004 Google adwords is a great program, I am an affiliate webmaster for them, and they have great results with targeted traffic. They also have several systems in place for click tracking so no extra clicks are counted, as well as having a variety of programs to limit your daily/weekly or monthly spending to keep you in your budget. Happy to tell more if anyone is interested.
