PhillyKev 0 #1 February 25, 2004 Saying John Kerry understands the needs and workings of the technology industry better than any other presidential candidate, 150 tech industry chief executives and other high-ranking officials threw their support behind the Democratic contender on Wednesday. happythoughts 0 #2 February 25, 2004 Quote Kerry's platform includes requiring companies to give workers three months' notice if their jobs are to be shipped overseas and ending tax credits that are rewarding companies for moving their jobs offshore. That is amazing. Tax credits for moving American jobs overseas. My view of the role of government is that it does stuff to make your life better. Infrastructure stuff that builds the country and helps the citizens. That is what my taxes should be used for. My taxes should not be used to help my job move elsewhere. "Here you go, government... Take this knife, now stab me. Did I say thanks?" I doubt he'll have much luck, but it's a nice thought. (edited to add the quote thingy)
JohnRich 4 #3 February 25, 2004 QuoteThat is amazing. Tax credits for moving American jobs overseas. The idea was to help struggling companies stay competitive, so that they don't lose business, thereby employing fewer people and paying fewer taxes to support the economy. In the news:"LEADING US technology companies have urged the country's Congress and the Bush administration not to impose new trade restrictions aimed at keeping US jobs from moving overseas..."News.com I wish these tech companies would make up their minds. On the one hand they endorse Kerry who wants to end tax breaks for offshoring, and on the other hand, they don't want to to make offshoring more difficult. It sounds like these companies are just as wishy-washy and confused as Kerry, straddling both sides of the fence.

Can you please explain to me how a US based company supports the economy by employing fewer people and paying less taxes?

If they can't compete in the marketplace because of U.S. labor practices, they go out of business, employ no one, and pay no taxes. If they offshore their manufacturing, for example, to keep their products competitive, then they remain in business, employing people in the U.S. to market, distribute and sell those products, and pay corporate taxes.
